SURAT: Hours after the arrest of two people for the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Mota Borsara village, 35 km from Surat city, one of the accused died after falling ill while in police custody on Thursday.
Shivshankar Chaurasiya, 45, was nabbed along with Munna Paswan, 40, as they tried to escape through thick bushes near Mandvi town in Surat district on Wednesday night.
Officials said that Chaurasiya was first taken to a community health centre (CHC) in Kamrej after he complained of breathlessness and anxiety. However, as his condition worsened, he was transferred to New Civil Hospital (NCH), where he died during treatment, police claimed.
Chaurasiya and Paswan had been lodged at the Local Crime Branch police station, officials said.
Surat range inspector general of police (IGP) Premvir Singh said, “The postmortem will reveal the exact cause of death. He was taken to the CHC as soon as he complained, but his condition continued to deteriorate.”
“He lived alone and frequently changed locations due to his criminal background. He was involved in a brutal murder in 2017 in Ankleshwar and was wanted for multiple offences, including house break-ins, across various police stations in the state,” added Hitesh Joysar, superintendent of police, Surat.
Around 10:45pm on Tuesday, three people on a bike noticed the girl and her friend standing near the field at a secluded place near Mota Borsara. They started intimidating the duo, asking why they were standing there at night. They started thrashing them and snatched the girl’s chain. Thereafter they snatched their mobile phones and forced the girl’s male friend to undress. They started blackmailing the girl for physical intimacy by threatening to make the photos viral. The girl then fled into the adjoining field, but one of the accused chased her with a stick. Her friend escaped from there out of fear after two others tried to beat him with sticks. The three people then took turns to rape the girl in the field, said police.
A team of around 200 police officers used human and technical surveillance to track the suspects after recovering their motorcycle from the crime scene. Paswan and Chaurasiya were apprehended, while the police continue to search for their accomplice, Ramsajivan alias Raju Vishwakarma.
In 2017, Chaurasiya was accused of murdering a man named Pradip Sarvaiya on April 17. Official sources revealed that Chaurasiya had an affair with Sarvaiya’s wife. He got Sarvaiya drunk and then fatally struck him with a blunt object. After the murder, Chaurasiya burned the body in an attempt to destroy the evidence.
Chaurasiya was also wanted for theft in Dahej, Bharuch, and in a case under the Arms Act in Amirgadh, Banaskantha. Police have traced his father to their native village in Madhya Pradesh.
