UPDATE: A jackpot-winning ticket was purchased in Sugar Land, Texas
The Mega Millions jackpot stands at an estimated $800 million for Tuesday night’s drawing. Only the game’s six jackpots over $1 billion have been higher.
Here are the winning Mega Millions numbers for Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024:
1, 2, 16, 24, 66, Mega Ball: 6, Megaplier: 4X.
The cash value of the prize is an estimated $404.2 million, which is what winners typically choose.
No one in the United States won Friday’s jackpot, which was worth $740 million. Six tickets were sold in the United States that matched all five white balls but not the gold Mega Ball number. A single ticket sold in Ohio had the Megaplier option added to win $2 million. The other five tickets — sold in California, Florida, Illinois, New Hampshire and Texas — won $1 million each.
The $1 million ticket sold in Texas was purchased at Stripes Store in Lamesa. Located south of Lubbock, Lamesa has a population of 8,674, according to 2020 U.S. census data.
There were also 49 total third-prize winning tickets sold. Ten of those were worth $20,000 each because they included the optional Megaplier, which was 2X Friday night. The other 39 third-tier winning tickets took home the standard $10,000 each.
The next Mega Millions drawing takes place on Friday, Sept. 13, 2024.
No one has hit the Mega Millions jackpot since June 4 when someone in Illinois matched all five white numbers plus the Mega Ball to win $552 million. Since then, 27 drawings have been held without a top prize winner.
The odds of hitting the Mega Millions jackpot are 1-in-302,575,350. A player who buys a $2 ticket has about a 1-in-12,607,306 chance to match five numbers and win at least $1 million, while the odds are 931,001-to-1 to win a third prize of at least $10,000.
Mega Millions starting jackpots and the rate at which the jackpot increases until won are established based on game sales and interest rates, with no fixed minimum amount. Players win the grand prize by matching five numbers from a set of white balls numbered 1 through 70 and one gold Mega Ball number from a set of balls numbered 1 through 25.
By choosing Megaplier for an additional $1, players can multiply their non-grand prize winnings by two, three, four or five times. Before each Mega Millions drawing, the Megaplier is drawn from a pool of 15 balls. Of those, five are marked with 2X, six with 3X, three with 4X and one with 5X.
All non-grand prizes are multiplied by the Megaplier number selected, meaning second-tier Match 5 prizes can range from $2 million to $5 million.
Mega Millions drawings are held each Tuesday and Friday in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are broadcast in Texas at 10:12 p.m. CT.
