“Wicked,” one of Broadway’s most popular modern-day classics, is coming to the big screen, with a soundtrack arriving in tandem with the film’s release.
“Wicked: The Soundtrack” is slated to be released alongside the movie’s box office debut on Nov. 22, with a pre-order launching today. It’s set to include renditions of the musical’s notable songs, including “Popular” and “Defying Gravity,” as performed by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande who star as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in a tale that follows their unlikely friendship.
The film is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel that inspired the musical, which featured an original score from Stephen Schwartz. The cast also includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University headmaster Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq and Bowen Yang as Pfannee.
The soundtrack will be available in various formats including CD, double vinyl, double picture disc, and digital. Target and Barnes & Noble will also offer exclusive editions including split pink and green vinyl, plus an alternative cover.
“Wicked” is one of the most anticipated movies of the fall slate. The project will be a two-part phenomenon with the second installment coming Nov. 2025. Jon M. Chu, the filmmaker behind “In the Heights” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” is the director of both films.
