Spectrum outages are affecting Texas customers; when will service be restored?

2024-07-10 08:55:02

If you’re a Spectrum customer in Texas and are experiencing service outages, know that you’re not alone.

Around 1 CT p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, Spectrum shared a post on its Ask Spectrum X account acknowledging the outages. The post read: “We are aware of an outage affecting customers in the Texas area. We apologize for inconvenience and are working to resolve as quickly as possible. Thank you.”

A few hours later, Spectrum said on X: “We are aware of the outage currently affecting customers in parts of Texas. The outage is due to a third-party infrastructure issue caused by the impact of Hurricane Beryl. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working with the third party to resolve this as quickly as possible. Thank you.”

By around 7:20 p.m. CT, Spectrum customers in San Antonio began reporting that service had been restored.

Service in El Paso, which is in far West Texas, did not seem to be impacted by the outage, although occasional slowdowns were noticed during the day.

Irate customers responded that they should receive credit for lost service, with others saying the company should provide faster updates on when service was expected to be restored.

Some Spectrum customers in Austin were battling slow internet speeds throughout the day before services cut out entirely around noon. Customers might have also found that the Spectrum mobile app is having operational issues, as well. This is extremely infuriating for customers who rely on Spectrum’s internet services for school or work — and to keep up to date on recovery efforts post-Beryl — and are seeking answers to their internet woes.

Around 2:40 p.m., the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office revealed in a Facebook post that a “tower in Houston was impacted due to the storm and affecting internet service in the region.”

Underneath the post, Facebook user Michael Mata commented that Spectrum’s “undersea fiber optic cable in Houston has been damaged thus the reason the whole state of Texas is experiencing an outage.” To survive without the internet, Mata recommended people be “patient and go outside and play like it’s 1990.”

When contacted via email about the cause of the outage, Spectrum’s director of regional communications for Texas told LoneStarLive.com the company is aware of the outages and is working to resolve the matter “as quickly as possible.”

After looking at a service outage map generated by downdetector.com, it appears Spectrum customers across the U.S. are experiencing issues with their services, as well. The most affected areas in Texas include Austin, Dallas, Houston, New Braunfels, Round Rock and San Antonio.

When will Spectrum services be restored?

When trying to call Spectrum’s internet customer support, LoneStarLive.com received an automated message saying the company is currently experiencing high call volume and thus cannot take the call. However, after calling in four times, LoneStarLive.com found out through a different automated message that the outage is impacting Spectrum’s internet, video and phone customers.

According to the company, technicians are currently working to resolve the numerous outages and expect services to be restored by 5 p.m.
