NEW YORK — The Mets had about as good of a homecoming as could have been expected.
After two weeks spent trying to clinch a playoff spot and extend their journey, the Mets felt the love from their home crowd. And they earned it.
The Mets received a sterling effort from Sean Manaea and rode a balanced offensive effort to score a 7-2 victory over the Phillies in Game 3 of the National League Division Series in front of 44,093 fans on Tuesday night at Citi Field.
The Mets opened up a lead on solo home runs by Pete Alonso and Jesse Winker off Aaron Nola. Then, in back-to-back innings, the Mets cashed in on bases-loaded opportunities, with Starling Marte and Jose Iglesias knocking two-run singles in the sixth and the seventh.
The Mets now have an opportunity to score the series victory in Game 4 at 5:08 p.m. Wednesday at Citi Field.
With Mets grabbing the advantage over the Phillies in Game 3, here are the live updates and analysis from the Mets’ 7-2 win:
With Phillies closer Carlos Estevez in the game, Francisco Lindor laced an RBI double inside the right-field line to score J.D. Martinez who drew a pinch-hit walk to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Mets lead the Phillies, 7-2, heading to the ninth.
Sean Manaea was sent out for the eighth inning but pulled by Carlos Mendoza after giving up a leadoff infield single to Edmundo Sosa. Sosa would later score on an RBI single by Bryce Harper off Phil Maton.
Manaea finished with one earned run allowed on three hits and two walks while striking out six in seven innings.
Maton, who also walked Kyle Schwarber, was charged with a run when Ryne Stanek gave up an RBI single to Nick Castellanos that cut the Mets’ lead down to 6-2.
Jose Alvarado struggled to put the Mets away in the seventh inning.
After striking out Francisco Alvarez and getting Francisco Lindor to pop up, Mark Vientos lined a single off Alvarado’s foot and Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso both walked. With the bases loaded and Jose Ruiz entering for the Phillies, Jose Iglesias lined a two-run single up the middle to put the Mets ahead 6-0.
The Mets had the pressure on against Aaron Nolas in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mark Vientos knocked a leadoff single and Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso walked to load the bases.
That ended Nola’s night.
With the bases loaded and Orion Kerkering in for the Phillies, Jose Iglesias grounded into a fielder’s choice, with Vientos being thrown out at home. Then, Jesse Winker flew out to shallow left field. But Starling Marte made sure that pressure wouldn’t be wasted. He looped in a two-run single to guide the Mets ahead 4-0.
Nola finished with four earned runs allowed on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in five innings.
Sean Manaea’s command appeared to be teetering to begin the sixth inning when he issued back-to-back walks to Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner.
But the left-hander erased the threat by striking out Bryce Harper and picking up a line-drive double play by Nick Castellanos to the middle of the diamond as Jose Iglesias caught Schwarber leaning.
The Mets lead 2-0 after the top of the sixth.
The Mets have only been able to capitalize on a few of Aaron Nola’s mistakes, otherwise the Phillies righty has been dialed in.
Nola ran his strikeout total to eight in the fifth inning by fanning Tyrone Taylor, Francisco Alvarez and Francisco Lindor in order.
The Mets lead 2-0 after five innings in Game 3.
Despite giving up a solo home run to Pete Alonso in the second inning, Alec Bohm had needed just 32 pitches to get through the first three innings.
That efficiency changed in fourth inning. Jesse Winker looked at three pitches before ripping a solo home run on a fastball into the second deck. The Mets jumped ahead 2-0 and ran Nola’s pitch count to 51 through four.
In most cases, the ball that Alec Bohm hit in the fourth inning would mean extra bases.
Bohm lined a first-pitch changeup into the right-center field gap, but Tyrone Taylor bare-handed it on one bounce off the wall and rifled a throw to second base and Francisco Lindor made the tag to record the out.
After not giving up a hit through the first two innings, Mets left-hander Sean Manaea encountered his first trouble in the top of the third inning.
He hit Edmundo Sosa in the opening at-bat of the frame and allowed a two-out single to Trea Turner. Facing Bryce Harper, Manaea induced a weak ground ball back to the mound to record the final out.
Manaea struck out both Johan Rojas and Kyle Schwarber in the inning. The Mets lead 1-0.
Pete Alonso is starting to catch fire in the 2024 postseason.
On the first pitch he saw against Aaron Nola in Game 3, Alonso belted an opposite-field home run off the face of the second deck in right field. It gave the Mets a 1-0 lead over the Phillies in the bottom of the second inning.
Alonso now has three home runs in his last four playoff games, dating back to his series-clinching blast in Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series on Oct. 3.
