The First ‘Agatha All Along’ MCU Trailer Is Actually Scary Good

2024-07-09 17:40:02

I’ve been fairly jaded when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and especially the many half-baked Disney+ live-action shows. I’ve been so burnt out on these, that even Agatha All Along sounded like a bad idea, despite how much I genuinely loved WandaVision and Agatha’s character on that show. Kathryn Hahn was great as that show’s surprise villain. But then WandaVision and Loki are diamonds in the rough when it comes to Marvel’s live-action TV shows.

Did Agatha need her own series? That was what bugged me. I thought Echo was a fine character in Hawkeye but did she need her own series? The answer—after watching it—was “definitely not.” But I think I was perhaps wrong about Agatha All Along all along. Either that, or the marketing department has simply put together a pitch-perfect trailer. This not only reminds me of a scarier WandaVision, I’m getting some Hocus Pocus vibes as well.

I love that this trailer doesn’t give too much of the plot away also beyond the basic premise of Agatha needing to get her powers back after her confrontation with Wanda. I’m genuinely curious what the story is going to be about. I’m also excited to see more of the cast, including an ominous Aubrey Plaza as Rio Vidal and Joe Locke as Wiccan.

Jac Schaeffer, the creator of WandaVision, returns to head-up Agatha All Along which is also great news. While I’m still a little irked by WandaVision’s finale, it remains my favorite Marvel live-action story since the “Snap”. I like that we’re following Harkness this time around and that she’s such a great classic Disney villain in so many ways. I could see her out for drinks with Cruella De Vil and Ursula.

Another familiar face from WandaVision is Debra Jo Rupp’s Sharon Davis, who was a resident of Westview and under Wanda’s spell and has since then somehow gained her own magical powers as well as several other residents of the town.

While WandaVision really played into the sitcoms of various eras, it’s clear that Agatha will be all about horror, though as dark as some of this trailer gets, it’s obviously also playing for laughs.

The series has had many titles including: Agatha: House of Harkness, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Agatha: The Lying Witch With Great Wardrobe before settling on the obvious Agatha All Along (which it was all along, get it?).

The series releases its two-part premiere on September 18th, 2024 with seven episodes releasing weekly through November 6th, just in time for Halloween. I will be reviewing here on this blog.
