New England Patriots captain and safety Jabrill Peppers faced several charges, including assault, strangulation and possession of drugs, Monday after an altercation with a woman at a Braintree apartment. Braintree police responded at 4:15 a.m. Saturday to a Liberty Street residence for a disturbance call involving an altercation between Peppers, 29, and his girlfriend. The caller said Peppers “hit her, choked her, took off her clothing and put her outside,” according to the police report. The woman told responding officers that Peppers put his hand on her neck and smashed her head against the wall before he allegedly pushed her down the stairs after an argument. Peppers was placed in handcuffs and taken to the Braintree Police Station, where an officer found a clear plastic bag containing a white powder substance inside Peppers’ wallet, police said. When questioned about the substance, Peppers said, “It is cocaine,” the police report read. When questioned about the altercation, Peppers said he asked the woman to leave his apartment several times and denied putting his hands on her, adding she “fell by herself on the stairs because she was intoxicated,” according to the police report. “He denied pushing her down the stairs and said that she was making those allegations to destroy his career,” the report said.Peppers was charged with assault and battery on a family member, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation and possession of a Class B Substance believed to be cocaine. The victim was treated at the scene, officials said. Peppers was arraigned in Quincy District Court, where not guilty pleas were entered. He was held on $2,500 bail and ordered to stay away from the alleged victim. “There’s evidence I’ve already seen, it sheds real doubt on the allegations, including video tape evidence,” said Peppers’ attorney Mark Brofsky. “Of course it’s kind of odd to hear, something about that, because that’s like nothing I’ve seen or heard about how he is here in this community,” said neighbor Tarrence Brown. The New England Patriots confirmed that they are aware of an incident involving Peppers; however, they released few details.“We informed the NFL, and we are still gathering information. I know the team put out a statement earlier today. I am not sure how the league and how we are going to handle that going forward, but we should find out some more information over the next few days,” New England Patriots Coach Jerod Mayo said.
