In the first top-25 matchup between the programs, the 24th-ranked Wolfpack (1-0) and 14th-ranked Volunteers (1-0) were on different ends of the spectrum at Bank of America Stadium. Tennessee looked like a College Football Playoff contender and N.C. State looked like the same program it’s been in recent seasons.
The Wolfpack hasn’t won against a top-15 opponent away from Raleigh since 2017 at Florida State. Led by quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who accounted for three touchdowns, the Volunteers became the first team to hang 50 on N.C. State since Clemson (55) in 2019.
Aydan White’s interception return for a touchdown in the second half was the only time the Wolfpack reached the end zone. Tennessee had six TDs and three field goals, with running back Dylan Smothers scoring two TDs with more than 130 rushing yards.
Tennessee led 20-3 at halftime, keyed by a Will Brooks pick-six in the second quarter. Trailing 10-3, NC State’s Grayson McCall threw an interception that ignited a 10-0 close to the first half for the Volunteers.
N.C. State is coming off a 38-21 win, powered by wide receiver KC Concepcion, against Western Carolina in Week 1. Led by quarterback Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee made quick work of Chattanooga in a 69-3 victory last week.
