Delhi High Court Issues Notice On Arvind Kejriwal’s Plea For Additional VC Meetings With Lawyers

2024-07-08 16:15:02

The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notice on a plea moved by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is in judicial custody in the alleged liquor policy scam, for granting two additional meetings with his lawyers through virtual conferencing.

Justice Neena Bansal Krishna sought response of the Tihar jail authorities as well as Enforcement Directorate (ED) within five days and listed the matter for hearing on July 15.

Senior Advocate Ramesh Gupta appeared for Kejriwal and said that the request for additional meetings with lawyers cannot be prejudicial in any manner.

As special counsel for ED, Zoheb Hossain, interjected, Gupta said that the issue is between Kejriwal and jail and the central probe agency cannot say anything.

Gupta said that Kejriwal is presently having 35 cases pending and thus wants two more additional meetings with his lawyers through VC.

Kejriwal has challenged the trial court order passed on July 01 dismissing his application for two additional meetings with his lawyers in connection with the money laundering case.

Kejriwal is in judicial custody in the corruption and money laundering cases related to the alleged scam.

The Chief Minister was remanded to CBI custody for three days on June 26, observing that the arrest cannot be said to be illegal.

Later, on June 29, Kejriwal was remanded to judicial custody.

Justice Krishna recently issued notice on Kejriwal’s plea challenging CBI’s arrest and three days of police custody remand. Notice has also been issued on Kejriwal’s plea seeking bail in the CBI case. Both the cases are fixed for hearing on July 17.

The probe agency examined the Chief Minister in Tihar jail where he is lodged in judicial custody in relation to the money laundering case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Kejriwal’s statement was recorded. This was hours after the Delhi High Court stayed the bail granted to the Chief Minister in the PMLA case.

After court’s permission, CBI examined Kejriwal in court on June 26 and then formally arrested him in the matter.

Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21. In May, he was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court till June 01 in view of general elections. He surrendered on June 2.
