Not everyone has welcomed Taylor Swift’s presence in the NFL, and one TV host has plenty of words for the naysayers.
Former NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson, co-host of “CBS Mornings,” got a lot off his chest after an NFL hype video prominently featuring pop star Taylor Swift drew some criticism from viewers who were less thrilled to see her ahead of the start of the regular season. The 29-second clip included several snippets of the singer attending different NFL games and supporting her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, whose Kansas City Chiefs host the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2 of the season.
Here’s what Burleson said.
Burleson didn’t hold back while addressing the critics who decried seeing Swift in an NFL hype video.
“Get out of your feelings,” Burleson said in response to the complaints from the NFL hype video. “‘Oh, are you upset, you’re a little mad because Taylor Swift is in the promo?’ Who cares! Wipe the drool off your tank top, put some pants on, and get out your mama’s basement!”
While the NFL promo may have rubbed some fans the wrong way, Burleson explained that it’s not uncommon for other sports to show celebrities at their games. He ended his points with a call to “get out of your feelings and watch the games.” Needless to say, the message was loud and clear.
What the critics missed while whining about Taylor Swift is that several of the league’s biggest stars — Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes, Nick Bosa, Josh Allen and the Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase, among others — are also featured prominently.
And as Burleson pointed out, it’s not uncommon for other sports leagues to draw in new fans by showcasing non-sports celebrities at their games.
Burleson signed with the Cleveland Browns in April 2014 after spending four seasons with the Detroit Lions, but he was released just before the season started. He has since worked as a studio analyst for the CBS Sports’ NFL pregame, halftime and postgame show, “The NFL Today,” and he is the host of Nickelodeon’s “NFL Slime Time,” according to his CBS bio.
Burleson enjoyed an 11-year NFL career with Detroit, Seattle and Minnesota. He amassed 5,630 receiving yards and 39 touchdowns in his career.
