Sarah Hildebrandt is a 2020 Olympic bronze medalist and 4-time world medalist at 50 kg for the United States. Hildebrandt is currently wrestling at the 2024 Paris Olympics and will compete for a gold medal on Wednesday – check out the below article to view her complete results.
Round Of 16 – 10-0 win over Ibtissem Doudou, ALG
Hildebrandt got her Olympic tournament started with a quick 10-0 tech over Doudou from Algeria. Hildebrandt earned an early takedown in the first and then transitioned immediately to her patented leg lace for 4 quick turns and the 10-0 win.
Quarterfinals – 7-4 win over Ziqi Feng, CHN
Feng struck first with an early takedown but Hildebrandt countered with a reversal to cut Feng’s lead to 2-1 early in the first. Then, Hildebrandt answered with a takedown off a shuck from a front headlock to take her first lead of the match. Feng and Hildebrandt traded takedowns to close out the first period giving Hildebrandt a 5-4 lead heading into the break.
In the second period, neither Feng nor Hildebrandt got close to a takedown in the first 2 minutes with both content to stay in the handfight. Then with just under a minute left, Feng picked up her attacks and Hildebrandt countered with a slick go-behind to extend her lead to 7-4. Feng couldn’t muster any offense and Hildebrandt secured her victory and guaranteed her place in a medal bout!
Semifinal – 5-0 win over Otgonjargal Dolgorjav, MGL
Hildebrandt earned a quick takedown in the first period after forcing Dolgorjav into a front headlock. Hildebrandt used her length to get the angle and earn an easy takedown to go up 2-0. Right at the end of the second period, Hildebrandt attempted a throw-by but Dolgorjav ended up on a leg. Hildebrandt scrambled through and countered for another takedown. Dolgorjav got hit with a penalty point giving Hildebrandt a 5-0 lead at the break.
In the second period, Dolgorjav got to Hildebrandt’s legs a few times but Hildebrandt used savvy defense via her whizzer and limp leg to avoid giving up points. Dolgorjav couldn’t penetrate through Hildebrandt’s defense and that’s it – Hildebrandt is an Olympic finalist!
Finals Opponent – Yusneylis Guzman, CUB
Sarah Hildebrandt was originally set to wrestle India’s Vinesh Phogat who pulled of the upset of the Olympics by defeating 4-time world and Olympic champ Yui Susaki in round 1. However, Phogat failed to make weight on Wednesday morning and now Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman, who Phogat defeated in the semifinals, will be Hildebrandt’s new opponent (read more about Phogat missing weight and UWW’s replacement protocols here).
Guzman has never won a world or Olympic medal and Hildebrandt has one prior head-to-head win over the Cuban – a 10-0 victory from the 2023 Pan-Am Championships. In that match, which you can watch below, Hildebrandt dominated from the start. She earned two first-period takedowns off of slide-bys, converted on two leg laces, and used an arm-bar to seal the deal with a tech in just over 2 minutes. Hildebrandt will be the big favorite when they meet in the gold medal match in Paris.
