CHENNAI: A bank employee was arrested on Thursday for stealing from jewellery shops in the city. He stole to purchase gifts for his girlfriend and maintain their extravagant lifestyle, police said.
The crime came to light on Tuesday night when the staff at Saravana Elite stores in T Nagar, while checking the inventory after the day’s sales, noticed a two-sovereign gold ring missing from the shop.
The showroom’s security team scoured CCTV camera footage and saw a customer sneaking out of the showroom with the gold ring.
A complaint was filed with Mambalam police who started searching for the suspect with the help of CCTV camera footage. The thief made their job easier. Emboldened by his frequent escapades, the man tried stealing from another branch of the Saravana Elite stores on Usman Road.
This time, showroom staff nabbed him and handed him over to Mambalam police. During inquiry, the suspect was identified as Sathish Kumar, 26, an MCA graduate employed at a private bank in the city. Police said he confessed to have stolen the ring from the shop. He sold it at a pawnbroker shop in Pallavaram.
During interrogation, he told the police that he received a salary of 30,000, which wasn’t enough to maintain the lavish lifestyle his girlfriend and he wanted. Police said the couple used to splurge on expensive dinners. Sathish also showered his girlfriend with expensive gifts frequently.
He told police that he had stolen jewellery from four shops in Chromepet, Pallavaram, and T Nagar so far.
“He usually entered the shops when they were crowded, in the morning or evening hours. He would ask the staff to take out the jewellery and take his phone out under the pretext of clicking pictures. He used to slip away with the valuable when the staff were not attentive,” a police officer said.
Sathish also told the police that he had taken loans on an app and did not have money to repay them. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
