C.L. Brown: Louisville football can’t keep digging early holes if it wants to have good season
Louisville football on outside of ACC championship race after loss to SMU at L&N Stadium
Coverage during the game:
No. 22 Louisville football will look to rebound after taking its first loss of the season when it hosts SMU today.
The Cardinals and Mustangs haven’t played each other in 40 years and revived the matchup with SMU now being part of the ACC. U of L, facing a Mustangs squad that has outscored its last two opponents, 108-58, will look to go 2-0 in conference action for the second straight year.
Despite a loss at Notre Dame, Louisville, too, has been a balanced team. The Cardinals are averaging 41.5 points while only allowing 16 points per outing. If Louisville beats SMU, it’ll be the Cardinals’ first win over the Mustangs in three meetings.

L.J. Johnson Jr., scored on a 1-yard run shortly after official review overturned a fumble by Brashard Smith that was recovered by U of L inside its own 10.
Ja’Corey Brooks caught an 86-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Shough. SMU cornerback Jonathan McGill fell down trying to contest the throw allowing Brooks to run the remaining 50 yards untouched.
Collin Rogers made a 43-yard field goal as the Cards kept them out of the end zone for the first time this game after allowing the Mustangs to reach their 20.
Running back Don Chaney Jr., scored on a 1-yard touchdown plunge on fourth and goal as Louisville opened the second half with an eight-play, 78-yard drive.
Collin Rogers made a 55-yard field goal to cap off the Mustangs’ 37-yard scoring drive.
BRock Travelstead made good on his second field goal of the game, this time from 38 yards out. The Cards advanced to the SMU 23, but a sack sabotaged them from getting any closer to the end zone
Kevin Jennings burst up the left side of the line and ran untouched for a 59-yard touchdown run on a third-and-2.
Brock Travelstead made a 46-yard field goal to made it four consecutive possessions combined to open the game with a score.
The Mustangs hit another big pass on the first play of the drive with a 31-yard completion to tight end R.J. Maryland. Backup quarterback Preston Stone replaced Jennings, who was injured on a 22-yard run, to throw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Key’Shawn Smith.
The Cards answered SMU with a touchdown drive on its first possession. The key play was a 50-yard strike from quarterback Tyler Shough to Ahmari Huggins-Bruce. It set up a 6-yard scoring pass from Shough to Ja’Corey Brooks.
SMU made it look easy blending tempo offense with big chunks of yardage on its first drive. Kevin Jennings’ 33-yard pass to Roderick Daniels Jr., was the big play on the drive that helped set up Daniels’ 5-yard touchdown run.
Quincy Riley is out for a second straight game. He suffered an undisclosed injury against Georgia Tech and hasn’t been back since the ACC opener.
Louisville will be without starting defensive lineman Dez Tell against SMU today. Tell, who was on the sidelines in street clothes, went out of last week’s game against Notre Dame with a leg injury but said he was feeling better on Monday.
Louisville will be without safety Devin Neal and wide receiver Jimmy Calloway against SMU. Neal has left the team, according to a team spokesperson.
Louisville vs SMU will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. Bob Wischusen and Louis Riddick will call the game from the booth at L&N Stadium, with Kris Budden reporting from the sidelines.
Louisville 45, SMU 31. Losing to Notre Dame, largely due to self-inflicted errors, will be the motivation the Cardinals need to get back on the winning side. Although both defenses have been great this season, I can see this being a battle of high-powered offenses with the Cardinals having enough ammo to come out on top.
