WASHINGTON (TNND) — In 23 states and Washington, D.C., you can register to vote on Election Day, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
States that facilitate same-day registration may engage more voters, especially those who decide to participate at the last minute. As both campaigns push to sway undecided voters, every registration could tip the scales in this tight race.
North Carolina allows same-day voter registration during its early voting period; New York only allowed same-day voter registration on October 26th during its early voting period.
Connecticut, Idaho, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Wyoming only allow same-day registration on Election Day.
Same-day registration is allowed on Election Day and during the early voting period in Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington, as well as Washington, D.C.
However, voters registering on the same day in Alaska and Rhode Island can only vote for the president and vice president.
North Dakota does not have voter registration. On Election Day, eligible citizens there must show an ID including their legal name, current address, and date of birth to vote.
In most other states, voters must register by a deadline usually between eight and 30 days before Election Day.
According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, roughly 244 million Americans are eligible to vote and more than162 million people could vote if we see record turnout like we did in 2020. The 2020 election saw a record turnout of 66.6% of eligible voters.
