Interim Manchester United manager Ruud van Nistelrooy was denied a second win in as many games as a Moises Caicedo stunner earned Chelsea a point at Old Trafford.
After a thumping midweek cup win, Bruno Fernandes had set the hosts on course for Premier League victory from the penalty spot after Robert Sanchez felled Rasmus Hojlund in the box. But minutes later, Caicedo met a dropping ball sweetly on the volley to beat Andre Onana and square affairs, with neither side able to add to their tally in a 1-1 draw.
An at-times drab game will have encouraged incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim to some degree, with interim boss Van Nistelrooy able to instil some defensive solidity against a threatening Chelsea attacking unit. Amorim will take charge at Old Trafford after the mid-November international break having been confirmed as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor this week.

Moises Caicedo finally proves worth to remind Ruben Amorim of tough Manchester United task
19:05 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford
Ruud van Nistelrooy set off down the touchline in celebration, leaping as he punched the air. And yet what threatened to be a triumphant occasion for a great goalscorer was instead altered by an occasional one. Chelsea committed £115m for Moises Caicedo in part because of their propensity to overpay for many a player. It certainly was not, however, for his capacity to find the net.
Yet fees of such magnitude can demand a player has a transformative impact and, in an unexpected way, the biggest signing in Premier League history did. A volley was struck beautifully, nestling in the corner of the Manchester United net. Van Nistelrooy only had four minutes to savour a lead he greeted so dramatically. Chelsea had a point at Old Trafford which, given their last league win here came when Sir Alex Ferguson was still managing, may have been the best they could achieve.

Bournemouth end Manchester City’s 32-game unbeaten run in Premier League
19:40 , Chris Wilson
Manchester City’s 32-game unbeaten run in the Premier League was ended by Bournemouth who gave a superb display to beat the champions 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium.
Not since losing to Aston Villa on December 6 last year had City lost in the league, but from the first moments on the south coast Andoni Iraola’s side looked a match for them, their energy and industry rewarded by goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson.
It looked at times like Bournemouth would run away from City. Marcus Tavernier struck a post at 2-0 to leave Pep Guardiola’s side clinging on by their fingertips, before Josko Gvardiol set up a nervous finish when he headed in Ilkay Gundogan’s cross.

Maresca speaks to the media
19:28 , Chris Wilson
Earlier on, Enzo Maresc told the media that Chelsea “are happy”.
“We knew it was a difficult game for many reasons. We scored, we came back. After the goal we tried to win.
“We are happy because we knew how difficult it would be.
“The [United] players want to prove they’re good enough. A new manager with different ideas so we had to prepare a different way.”
On his half-time change when he brought on Marc Cucurella for Malo Gusto: “It was quite clear. We tried something different tactically. Not an injury for Malo [Gusto], just a tactical decision.”
Ruud van Nistelrooy reacts
19:21 , Chris Wilson
Ruud van Nistelrooy has been speaking to the media, and he says that he is “slightly disappointed”.
“I think we had the better of the chances in the game. Overall, the performance of the players was fantastic.
“The players did really well and fought in every inch of the pitch. It was very good to watch that bit.
“Overall the chances we created, we could have scored one more to win the game. It was a shame we couldn’t. Overall I’m slightly disappointed we didn’t win.
“It’s an emotional rollercoaster – it’s been almost a full week where so many things happened. My job was to steady the ship. The players reacted very well, [there’s] something to build on in the next two games.
“I came here to help the club in any capacity. After these two games that will continue and hopefully it can work out. It’s special to be back in the city and at the club.
“I try to share the culture of the club, the culture of the town and the fans. That’s an important part. I’m glad I can share these moments and help the players understand the spirit.
“I saw the spirit on the pitch on Wednesday and today. That’s the foundation to grow.”

In his post-match reaction, Bruno Fernandes says that “everyone knows how much I wanted the goal to come”.
“I need to help the team with goals and assists. It’s been one of the most disappointing things this season – but I got some in the cup. Now [I’m] scoring in the Premier League.
“It was a lot of disappointment in the dressing room. We could have won the game.
“Not much has changed. We get the point and we can be happy for that. We need to be disappointed because we’re far back in the league.
On incoming manager Ruben Amorim, he says: “I am a big fan of Sporting and watch a lot of their games”.
“Ruben Amorim brought the excitement back to the club – it was a little bit split when he came [to Sporting]. He transformed everything and brought everyone together.”

That result means United stay in 13th place in the Premier League, with 12 points from their opening 10 games. It’s their worst ever start to a Premier League season, though it does feel like a decent result.
Chelsea miss the chance to go third, though they do climb up to fourth, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference, with 18 points.

A strange game to end the weekend in the Premier League. United struck first but were lucky overall, while Chelsea needed some luck in the form of a perfect strike from Caicedo. The away side dominated the ball in parts but never really looked that threatening.
For United, there clearly remains plenty to work on for Ruben Amorim when he arrives, mainly in terms of attacking patterns and midfield shape, especially in transition.
The points are shared once again in what is the most drawn Premier League fixture.

It’s Chelsea with the dangerous attacks as we approach the end of the 90. Mudryk makes his way into the area and cuts back inside, only for the ball to be put behind for a corner.
It goes short to James, and then diagonally back to Mudryk, who uses a clever backheel to feed in Palmer, but his cross is picked out by Onana. Chelsea come again but now Mudryk’s cross ends up in the gloves of the United ‘keeper.

Richard Jolly at Old Trafford:
“A quick exchange of goals. Bruno Fernandes’ goal was a reward for a better second-half performance from United, who have looked less open, and a punishment for Robert Sanchez, who conceded it in another moment to suggest that, despite all their spending, Chelsea still lack a top-class goalkeeper.
Moises Caicedo’s volley was sweetly struck, if surprising he scored in such a manner. Given Chelsea’s first-half superiority, they could feel it was the least they deserved.”

Richard Jolly at Old Trafford:
“Not the most dramatic start to the second half. Enzo Maresca’s decision to bring Marc Cucurella on and shift Reece James to right-back may have helped Chelsea tighten up at the back. A glimpse at the two benches shows they have more game-changing options, too.”

It was a difficult half at times for both sides, though you’d have to say that Chelsea had the better of it overall. Neither side has really been able to fashion a good chance, bar Rashford’s attempt that hit the post with the last kick of the half.
Even when Chelsea hit the post, it came from confusion at the corner rather than incisive attacking play.
Jackson continues to be the main man in attack along with Palmer, so Chelsea will be hoping they can get into the game more.
For United, Ruud van Nistelrooy has to try and find a way to get them playing, especially in attacking. There are too many remnants from the ten Hag era, even if that isn’t particularly his fault.

Richard Jolly at Old Trafford:
“Chelsea are looking to get Noni Madueke running at Noussair Mazraoui at every opportunity with a lot of their attacks focused on their right flank.
United, of course, have not had a specialist left-back playing left-back all season, while Marcus Rashford is not affording the Moroccan much protection. Van Nistelrooy could try switching his full-backs, but then Diogo Dalot has struggled on the left this season.”

Richard Jolly at Old Trafford:
“Open and entertaining start at Old Trafford between two teams whose encounters last season were full of shots and goals. There are hints that, with their speed and directness, Chelsea could be dangerous on the counter-attack. Given the hole United sometimes have in midfield, Cole Palmer could spend quite a bit of this game unmarked.

Chelsea have named the youngest average starting XI in the Premier League this season (23 years, 206 days).
Cole Palmer has been directly involved in 33 Premier League goals for Chelsea in 2024 (21 goals, 12 assists). Only two players have had more goals and assists in a year for the Blues – Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in 2001 (25 goals, 11 assists) and Didier Drogba in 2010 (22 goals, 13 assists).
Wesley Fofana has been yellow carded in each of his last six Premier League appearances, only the fifth player in Premier League history to do so. The only player to be carded in seven games in a row is Joey Barton for QPR in 2014/15.

United and Chelsea have met a total of 195 times, with the first match dating back to Christmas Day in 1905. Overall, United have won 83, Chelsea have won 56 and 56 have ended as draws.
Last season, the two teams played out one of the games of the season at Stamford Bridge, as a hat-trick from Cole Palmer secured a late 4-3 win for Chelsea.
In this fixture last season, United earned a narrow 2-1 win thanks to goals from Scott McTominay.
Enzo Maresca has found a formula which may finally deliver a return on Chelsea’s extraordinary expenditure
16:00 , Chris Wilson
Erik ten Hag left Manchester United 14th in one Premier League table and second in another. Had the Dutchman figured in the top two in the standings that mattered most, he would probably be overseeing Sunday’s game against Chelsea. Instead, a meeting of the 2008 Champions League finalists represents another summit clash.
Because, over the course of Ten Hag’s reign, United’s transfer outlay topped £600m. It put them behind only one club, albeit one who spent more than twice as much. With Chelsea’s £1.3bn expenditure, it means these squads should have been bolstered to the tune of almost £2bn in two-and-a-half years.
It is an understatement to say it has not all been well spent. It is also pertinent to note that there are times when Ten Hag wanted to spend even more: on a senior striker in the summer of 2023, on buys in two winter windows when his budget was severely limited. It is a subplot that some of Chelsea’s buying – or the facility to buy within PSR, anyway – came courtesy of United, paying them £55m for the homegrown Mason Mount.

Enzo Maresca sends warning to Enzo Fernandez after dropping Chelsea star

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca insisted no player is irreplaceable after dropping £106m midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
The World Cup winner with Argentina has been demoted to Maresca’s second string featuring only in cup competitions, and has not started either of the last two Premier League games.
Co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali fought a dogged battle to land the 23-year-old from Benfica in January 2023, eventually agreeing a then British-record fee to sign him on deadline day.

How Ruben Amorim will change Manchester United – starting with three things
15:05 , Chris Wilson
If Ruben Amorim’s task of restoring Manchester United to the champions of England looks nigh on impossible from the team’s lowly current position, at least he is a manager with form for remarkable transformation.
Amorim took charge of Sporting CP in March 2020, as a 35-year-old coach with only two months’ experience managing in the Portuguese top flight. He inherited a giant club without a league title in 18 years, in disarray on and off the field after the exits of key players Raphinha, Bas Dost and Bruno Fernandes – ironically now set to be his captain at Old Trafford.
Amorim quickly set about imprinting his own football identity. In his first full season in charge, his young side set a league record 32-game unbeaten run on their way to winning the Primeira Liga, ending the long duopoly of Porto and Benfica. Sporting lost only one league game all season, against Benfica, after already securing the title.

How the table looks

These two sides have had markedly different starts to the new campaign, with Chelsea showing signs of early promise as the reign of Enzo Maresca has begun.
The Italian has taken his side to sixth in the league before today’s match, though they could move as high as third today if they win (depending on the result of the match between Spurs and Villa at 2pm).
In contrast, United’s start to the season could hardly have gone much worse, as they sit 13th in the table with just 11 points from nine matches. The Red Devils could move into 10th if they were to win today (again depending on results elsewhere).

Ruben Amorim has been appointed Manchester United head coach and has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Old Trafford.
United, who will have a club option to extend Amorim’s contract by a further year until 2028, believe they have appointed the most exciting young manager in Europe.
They have paid the £8.3m release clause to take him from Sporting, along with a further £850,000 to bring him in before the end of his 30-day notice period.
Amorim was United’s top target and the only candidate they spoke to after sacking Erik ten Hag on Monday, with a delegation from Old Trafford going immediately to Lisbon for face-to-face talks with Sporting.

Sacked Erik ten Hag posts open letter to Manchester United fans as ‘dream comes to an end’
Saturday 2 November 2024 16:16 , Chris Wilson
Erik ten Hag has thanked the Manchester United fans for their “unshakable support” during his two-and-a-half years in charge, as the Dutchman reflected that his “dream has come to an end” after he was sacked on Monday.
United appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach earlier on Friday and the Sporting Lisbon boss will become the club’s seventh permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired when he begins his role on November 11.
After a promising start, Ten Hag met the same fate as every other manager who has attempted to bring success back to Old Trafford after Ferguson, and he was sacked with the club 14th in the Premier League table and struggling on the pitch.
