Manchester City lost top spot in the Premier League table after a 2-1 defeat at AFC Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.
Pep Guardiola’s side have been beset by injuries of late but they fell behind to a fine sweeping move early on, with Antoine Semenyo scoring to put the Cherries ahead. Evanilson then slid in a second on the counter-attack after the break to put the home team clear – and just a short spell on from them beating Arsenal too – and despite a late consolation from Josko Gvardiol, Bournemouth hung on to win.
Combined with Liverpool beating Brighton, it meant City fell into second place and missed the chance to open a bigger gap to Arsenal, who had lost earlier in the day at Newcastle. Follow all the Premier League reaction with our live blog below:

Bournemouth see off the late waves of pressure to hold on for a first Premier League victory over Manchester City, with a goal in each half enough for a 2-1 win at the Vitality Stadium. Iraola’s game plan was executed to perfection by his players, who remained deep in a low, organised block before springing forward with pace and power – overloading the flanks to cause Gvardiol and Walker no end of troubles. Semenyo got proceedings underway after just nine minutes with a well-taken finish thanks in part to Kerkez’s assist, allowing the Cherries to sit back and absorb pressure for the remainder of the first half. The pattern would repeat itself in the second half, with Guardiola’s team dominating possession but struggling to test Travers, which would give the hosts enough time to double their advantage, this time through Evanilson, with Kerkez again playing the key pass. Brooks saw his opportunity to add another goal denied by the post, which sparked the visitors into life. They would hit the target with an effort for the first time after 80 minutes, and scored two minutes later thanks to Gvardiol’s header, but they could not find a way through a second time, with Haaland denied twice in quick succession from close range deep in stoppage time. Despite almost identical expected goals outputs (1.8 to 1.77 for the visitors), it’s Iraola’s team who get the win ahead of a trip to play Brentford on November 9, while Manchester City suffer defeat for the first time this season and will look to get back to winning ways against Sporting CP in the Champions League on Tuesday, and Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday. That concludes our commentary of the Premier League fixture between Bournemouth and Manchester City – we hope you’ve enjoyed it!
16:57
FULL-TIME: BOURNEMOUTH 2-1 MANCHESTER CITY
16:54
FODEN FLASHES IT WIDE! The England international is wriggles into a pocket of space 18 yards from goal and manages to hit a bouncing shot while leaning forward, but he somehow fails to hit the target – much to the relief of Travers!
16:52
OFF THE LINE AND OFF THE POST TO KEEP BOURNEMOUTH IN FRONT! Haaland meets Foden’s deep corner at the far post and redirects the ball towards goal from less than five yards out, forcing Travers across his line to make the stop at the last possible second. Unable to scramble it away, the goalkeeper gives the Norway international a second chance but this time he sends it off the base of the woodwork!
16:48
The fourth official indicates six minutes will be added to the end of the match for stoppages.
16:48
Yellow Card Tyler Shaan Adams
16:47
Substitution Marcus Joseph Tavernier Dean Donny Huijsen
16:47
Doku cuts inside from the left wing before going down under a challenge from Smith inside the 18-yard box, which prompts the visiting players to appeal for a penalty. The referee makes up his mind immediately though, and denies the claims, allowing play to continue, with the Bournemouth captain eventually hooking the ball out of play for a throw.
16:45
Gvardiol looks to hit a shot from distance after receiving Silva’s square pass, but Brooks steps out of his penalty area with enthusiasm to smother the effort and scramble it clear temporarily.
16:43
Bournemouth looked confident and in control for the majority of the match despite their lack of possession, but they’ll need to see off one final flurry from Manchester City if they wish to register their first-ever top-flight win against the current Premier League champions. Guardiola’s team will throw everything at the final five minutes in search of an equaliser, with nothing left to lose.
16:42
Substitution İlkay Gündoğan Jérémy Baffour Doku
16:40
MANCHESTER CITY PULL ONE BACK! 2-1! Foden and Silva work a quick, short-corner routine that gets the ball to Gundogan inside the right channel. The Germany international then teases a lovely cross to the far post for Gvardiol, who rises high above Kerkez and puts his header into the top corner despite the flailing Travers!
16:39
Assist İlkay Gündoğan
16:38
Manchester City finally register their first shot on target after 80 minutes, with Haaland getting on the end of Nunes’ cross, but the off-balance striker can only prod a weak effort towards Travers, who makes a clean catch, thanks to pressure from the closely marking Senesi.
16:37
SIDE-NETTING! Brooks wins an inch of space ahead of Lewis thanks to a wonderful show of close control after Tavernier’s pass, but he can only hit his right-footed effort into the side of the goal, failing to force Ederson into a save!
16:35
Substitution Francisco Evanilson de Lima Barbosa Enes Ünal
16:34
Substitution Justin Dean Kluivert David Robert Brooks
16:34
Manchester City have not tested Travers in over 75 minutes of play, with all eight shots – seven from inside the penalty area – failing to hit the target. Despite the quality of Foden, Silva and Gundogan in midfield, the visitors have been largely unable to unpick the organised Bournemouth defence, who have remained determined and resolute.
16:33
Play is not restarted after following Manchester City’s substitution, with Kerkez now down on the pitch receiving treatment on his ankle. Iraola will be desperate for his left-back to see out the remainder of the game, with the Hungary international playing a pivotal role in both of Bournemouth’s goals today.
16:31
A change for Manchester City with 17 minutes to play sees Ake taken off for Lewis, which may move Gvardiol to centre-back.
16:28
Yellow Card Kyle Andrew Walker
16:28
Kluivert has a go at goal from just over 20 yards out, sending his shot in between Ake and Akanji, but it’s dealt with easily by Ederson.
16:27
A CHANCE TO KILL THE GAME IS WASTED! Tavernier cuts inside from the right ahead of Gvardiol, who is slow to cover, and curls a left-footed shot past the outstretched arm of Ederson from 25 yards out. Despite putting it out of reach, the winger is denied by the frame of the goal, with the rebound falling kindly to Smith. With the goal gaping, the full-back follows up and somehow skies his effort from six yards out, which keeps the score at 2-0!
16:24
Substitution Ryan Christie Tyler Shaan Adams
16:21
Goal Francisco Evanilson de Lima Barbosa
16:21
Gundogan whips an inswinging free-kick towards the six-yard box, where it nodded away by Zabarnyi, but only as far as Kovacic 25 yards from goal. The Croatia midfielder attempts an audacious first-time volley but can’t hit the target, sending it high and wide.
16:19
Cook’s corner is rather disappointing, with the midfielder sending it over the heads of his awaiting team-mates and directly behind for a goal-kick at the far post.
16:18
Senesi’s clearance sparks a Bournemouth counter-attack, with Semenyo again running past everybody down the left wing. He cuts inside looking to test Ederson but Gvardiol closes down the space well and deflects it behind for a corner.
16:18
Manchester City move the ball through the lines beautifully, with Silva playing the incisive pass into the penalty area for Nunes, but the winger can’t find the room to dig out a shot before Senesi whacks it away.
16:16
Guardiola is having a word with the fourth official while Haaland gets to his feet and trudges off the pitch, with the animated coach not happy with the lack of a card for the tackle. The good news is the striker looks okay to continue, and he will retake his place once he gets the attention of the referee.
16:15
Play is stopped for Haaland, who has stayed down after being upended by Cook’s sliding challenge. The referee initially allows play to continue and VAR does not believe they have a cause to intervene as the midfielder won the ball, but after a while Bournemouth put it out of play for the striker to receive treatment.
16:14
Manchester City have had even more possession following the restart, with the visitors closing in on 80 per cent of the ball. Bournemouth seem willing at this stage to let them have it at a comfortable distance, defending deep, before breaking on the counter.
16:11
Bournemouth have lost all 11 of their Premier League games against sides starting the day top of the table – the worst loss rate in the competition’s history.
16:09
FODEN DRAGS IT WIDE! Nunes wriggles past Zabarnyi and draws two more defenders towards him before cutting a pass back to Foden on the penalty spot, but his first-time effort is put wide of the far post!
16:08
Haaland looks to get on the end of Silva’s chipped cross at the far post, but Senesi times his leap to perfection and gets a touch to the ball, putting it off the Manchester City striker and behind for a goal-kick.
16:07
Foden turns in a pocket of space 25 yards from goal and slides a pass to Gvardiol, whose cross from near the byline is immediately repelled and put out for a throw by the head of Zabarnyi.
16:05
A CHANCE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE RESTART! Semenyo bursts through the lines after Walker misplays Senesi’s pass forward and takes the ball to the penalty spot before leaving it to Evanilson, whose poked effort is put behind for a corner by a sliding Ederson!
16:03
Bournemouth get the match restarted from the kick-off!
15:51
Despite injuries to a number of key players – including Rodri and Jack Grealish – Guardiola still has a number of experienced options to call upon from the bench to change the match, with De Bruyne chief among them. His connection with Haaland could put the Bournemouth back line under increased pressure in the second half, while the tricky Savinho coil take the spot of Nunes on the left. Iraola will be desperate for his side to see out a first Premier League win over Manchester City, and could call upon Billing or Adams to replace the booked Christie in midfield, but the Bournemouth coach will know one goal probably won’t be enough, with Brooks and Unal ready to add fresh legs into the attack and stretch the pitch late on in search of some insurance.
15:49
Bournemouth take a fully deserved 1-0 lead into the half-time interval at the Vitality Stadium, leading Manchester City thanks to Semenyo’s well-taken goal after just nine minutes. Iraola’s side were clearly up for the challenge and started with real intensity, looking to pressure every Manchester City pass and turn defence into attack quickly through Kerkez and Semenyo. Their bravery was rewarded within the opening quarter-hour, when Semenyo latched onto Kerkez’s low delivery and swivelled to tuck a far-post finish past Ederson. Despite dominating the possession statistics, Manchester City were not able to get themselves back in the game, failing to test Travers at all in the opening period, with Haaland’s shot dragged wide after 40 minutes the closest the visitors came to restoring parity. An xG of 0.63 for the Cherries leads the way, with Guardiola’s team producing 0.47, after five off-target efforts.
15:49
HALF-TIME: BOURNEMOUTH 1-0 MANCHESTER CITY
15:47
The fourth official indicates one minute will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
15:47
Silva looks to win an inch of space ahead of the covering Christie, faking the cross on a number of occasions, but the Bournemouth midfielder holds his ground and fails to bite, forcing the Portugal international to turn around and pass it back to work a different angle.
15:46
Manchester City have conceded the first goal in their matches on four occasions this season, and have come from behind to win at every opportunity. Bournemouth, on the other hand, have not lost a match at the Vitality Stadium this season when scoring first, winning twice and drawing once.
15:41
Semenyo squeezes a pass through the lines for Evanilson, with the striker constantly on the shoulder of the last defender, but referee Michael Oliver is unable to get out of the way despite a hop, resulting in a stoppage in play before Bournemouth are able to restart.
15:40
CHANCE! Nunes puts the ball on his right foot to work an inch of space ahead of Smith before curling a cross to the far post for Haaland. The Norway international manages to bring it down with his chest and turn Senesi, but he drags his eventual strike wide of the target from close range!
15:39
In no particular hurry, both Semenyo and Cook refuse opportunities to shoot from just outside Ederson’s penalty area, instead opting to work it around the 18-yard box looking for the right time to strike. With just over five minutes to play the hosts are not looking to take risks and expose themselves at the other end, with Manchester City able to score goals in bunches.
15:37
Bournemouth are camping all 10 outfield players just outside Travers’ 18-yard box, looking to see off the waves of pressure ahead of the half-time interval. The Cherries have been fully deserving of their lead after 36 minutes, outshooting their opponents while maintaining less possession, and Iraola will be desperate for his side to hold on until the whistle.
15:36
Nunes spots the overlapping run of Gvardiol and chips a pass past Smith for the enterprising left-back, but Tavernier wedges himself in between the ball and the man, eventually winning a free-kick inside his penalty area to clear his lines.
15:34
Ederson pings the ball over the top of the defence for Haaland, but three Bournemouth defenders track the imposing striker, with Senesi getting the telling touch to end the move.
15:33
Zabarnyi goes long for Kerkez, who brings the ball down from the sky with skill, keeping it away from Foden before knocking it back to the advanced Senesi in an attempt to keep possession in Manchester City’s half.
15:31
Manchester City look to work a short-corner routine but Kovacic makes a mistake while on the ball, allowing Semenyo to win it back and drive from one penalty area to the other unimpeded. The winger shows strength and skill on his way towards the 18-yard box but can’t find room for a shot, instead laying it off to Kluivert, whose low drive from distance misses the frame of the goal.
15:29
Silva takes up a reserved position on the right and hits a pass forward for the overlapping Walker but Zabarnyi gets a toe in to take it behind for a corner.
15:28
Foden teases a cross to the far post for Haaland, who is allowed to rise and knock the ball down in between two defenders, but the aforementioned Foden can’t follow up at the back post before Christie puts it out for a throw.
15:26
Looking to beat the offside trap and punish Manchester City for their high line, Semenyo hits a pass through the middle of the park for the anticipating Evanilson, but Ake watches it the whole way and times his interception well.
15:24
Foden raises an arm in apology after his threaded pass into the penalty area from a central position sails directly behind for a Travers goal-kick, with Haaland not able to attack the delivery.
15:23
Kerkez is a bit too eager to win back possession from Foden just in front of the technical areas, with the left-back giving away a free-kick after a quick shift of the ball from the England international.
15:20
Silva’s inswinging corner-kick towards the near post is beaten away by Evanilson, who is back to do his defensive duties.
15:18
Semenyo spots the run of Evanilson and plays a cross into the six-yard box from a reserved position on the right wing, but it’s easily caught by Ederson – who is not put under any pressure.
15:17
Bournemouth again work the ball down the left wing with expertise through the trio of Kerkez, Christie and Tavernier, with the latter eventually floating a cross to the far post for Semenyo that’s cleared by Gvardiol.
15:15
Ake strides through midfield and plays a one-two pass with Nunes on the left wing, before hitting a curling first-time shot from just inside the penalty area that sails high of Travers’ goal.
15:13
The hosts have been rewarded for their intense and aggressive start, with the Cherries looking to capitalise every time Manchester City turn the ball over. They’ve already hit four shots – creating an expected goals of 0.596, while Manchester City have yet to test Travers, despite maintaining over 60 per cent possession.
15:11
Assist Miloš Kerkez
15:10
Goal Antoine Serlom Semenyo
15:10
Senesi launches a long pass down the left wing in search of Tavernier, but the high, hopeful delivery fails to find his team-mate, giving Walker the chance to restart play from a throw in his own half.
15:06
Yellow Card Ryan Christie
15:06
Gvardiol gets the better of Cook down the left wing, sending the midfielder to the ground near the corner-flag, but he manages to regain his footing and put the ball out of play for a throw.
15:05
EDERSON KEEPS THE SCORE LEVEL! Two Bournemouth forwards are denied by the Manchester City goalkeeper in quick succession after another giveaway in midfield, with Ake caught in possession this time. Tavernier puts a pass into the 18-yard box for the sliding Semenyo, who is stopped by a diving Ederson, before the follow-up attempt from Kluivert is also denied!
15:03
Walker gives the ball away in midfield, allowing Kluivert to split the Manchester City defence with a pass through the lines for Evanilson, but Ederson is quick off his line to meet the bal at the edge of his penalty area.
15:03
Manchester City get the match underway from the kick-off!
14:48
Manchester City also make three changes from the team they last fielded in the Premier League, beating Southampton 1-0 on October 26. Walker returns to fitness to replace Lewis at right-back, but an injury to Ruben Dias necessitates the inclusion of Ake at centre-back. Gundogan is also brought back into the starting line-up in Savinho’s spot, pushing Silva out to the wing.
14:48
Bournemouth make three alterations to the XI that drew 1-1 with Aston Villa last weekend. Smith is preferred to Araujo at right-back, while an injury to Dango Ouattara sees Tavernier fill the gap on the right wing. The final swap is in attack, where Unal is dropped for Evanilson, whose late goal salvaged a point last time out.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up – starting with our hosts!
14:38
Manchester City travel to the South Coast looking to avenge their 2-1 loss to Tottenham in the League Cup on Thursday; their first of the campaign in any competition. An impressive nine matches without defeat to begin the year in the Premier League however, sees Pep Guardiola’s side once again set the pace at the top with 23 points, one ahead of Liverpool who play Brighton concurrently. Phil Foden has been the key man each of the last four times Manchester City has met Bournemouth in league play, scoring once in each match (including the lone strike in a 1-0 win) as well as providing two assists.
14:32
The most one-sided fixture in the top division, Bournemouth welcome Manchester City to the Vitality Stadium, looking to end a run that has seen the Cherries lose all 15 of their meetings between the Premier League and League Cup. Andoni Iraola’s team followed up an impressive 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the league two weeks ago with a last-gasp 1-1 draw with high-flying Aston Villa last Saturday thanks to Evanilson’s 97th-minute strike, and a result today could give the 12th-placed club their first three-match unbeaten run in the Premier League since the first three games of the season.
