In his first game in Columbus, Lionel Messi helped Inter Miami defeat the Crew 3-2 with two goals. The victory on Wednesday secured Miami the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the MLS club with the best regular-season record.
It was a tightly contested first 45 minutes of the game, with both teams being held scoreless. That changed in the final minute of regulation in the first half.
Messi was inside the Crew’s box and was able to beat out two defenders to go one-on-one with goalkeeper Patrick Schulte. While Schulte was positioned in the middle of Columbus’ goal, Messi sent his shot to Schulte’s left and scored.
Messi would extend Miami’s 1-0 lead five minutes later. Taking a free kick following a foul charged to the Crew’s Rudy Camacho, Messi bent a ball around Columbus’ wall of defenders for his second goal.
Diego Rossi scored in the first minute of the second half to halve the Crew’s deficit.
Miami only needed a minute to extend the lead back to two goals, when a miscommunication between Schulte and Camacho in the Crew’s box led to a goal from Luis Suarez.
At the 61-minute mark, Columbus caught a break when Miami’s Federico Redondo was charged with a handball inside his own box, giving the Crew a penalty kick. Cucho Hernandez converted, cutting the lead to 3-2.
Shortly after Hernandez’s goal, with over 25 minutes remaining in the game, Camacho was shown his second yellow card, leading to his red-card ejection. The Crew played with ten men the rest of the way.
The Crew would get another penalty kick opportunity when Miami was found guilty of another handball in the box. This time Ian Fray was the offender. Hernandez missed on his second attempt, however, and the Crew failed to score any additional goals.
Ahead of a corner kick, the Crew substituted out midfielder Alex Matan for Aziel Jackson. The Crew were unable to capitalize on the corner once Jackson entered the game.
Inter Miami midfielder David Ruiz was given a yellow card for poor sportsmanship.
Ahead of the yellow card, the Crew made a substitution, midfielder Andres Herrera replaced Mo Farsi. Miami made on after the yellow, replacing midfielder Diego Gomez with Matias Rojas.
The officials went to VAR review to determine that Inter Miami defender Ian Fray committed a handball in the box, setting up Cucho Hernandez’s second penalty kick attempt.
Hernandez had already got the ball past goalkeeper Drake Callender once but failed on this attempt. Callender hit Hernandez’s shot away and Miami was able to clear the ball out of bounds.
Crew midfielder DeJuan Jones sent a cross into Miami’s box to forward Jacen Russell-Rowe, who was crashing near the goal. Russell-Rowe got his feet caught under him, and instead of receiving the pass, Russell-Rowe fell as the ball rolled passed him.
Midfielder Alex Matan almost got a shot attempt off at the top of the box but turned over the ball.
With its second substitution of the game, Inter Miami replaces defender Marcelo Weigandt with Sergii Kryvtsov.

Following a foul at midfield, Crew defender Rudy Camacho was given a yellow card.
It took just as little time for Inter Miami to extend its lead back to two goals as it did for the Crew to cut it down. After a mishap between Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte and Crew defender Rudy Camcho inside their own box, Miami forward Luis Suarez was able to capitalize with a header to give his team a 3-1 lead.
Less than a minute into the start of the second half, Crew forward Diego Rossi scored from the middle of Inter Miami’s box. Miami’s lead is cut down 2-1.
After the ball bounced around between Crew midfielder Mo Faris and Miami defender Jordi Alba at the top of the box, Farsi got a pass off to Rossi, who was uncontested in the box.
Lionel Messi put Inter Miami ahead 2-0 in the first half with two goals. The first half stats:

It was the first yellow card of the game when Inter Miami midfielder Federico Redondo received a yellow card for a foul against Crew midfielder Darlington Nagbe at midfield.
From top-left, inside Inter Miami’s box, Crew forward Christian Ramirez launched a shot that would go far left of the goal and out of bounds.
Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets was called for a foul on a play on Miami’s side of the field in which Busquets collided with Crew midfielder Mo Farsi in mid-air. Quickly after the foul, fans at Lower.com Field made it known their disappointment in there being no red card on the play, specifically after a replay was shown.
Farsi did require medical attention after the hit, but was able to remain in the game.
For the second time in the game, it looked as though a player had scored just to have the goal overruled due to an offsides call. This time, it was a Miami goal from defender Marcelo Weigandt that was overruled, after he was offsides inside Columbus’ box.
Crew defender Rudy Camacho was able to hit the ball out of bounds on Inter Miami’s first scoring attempt of the game.
Striker Cucho Hernandez looked to have given the Crew a 1-0 lead early against Inter Miami, and even started celebrating the goal before officials ruled that Hernandez was offsides, overruling the goal.
The Crew were awarded the first corner kick of the match after Miami kicked the ball over the goal line. With Diego Rossi taking the kick, the Crew were unable to make anything of the opportunity, as Miami quickly cleared the ball out of the box with a header.
