Real Madrid vs Real Betis: What was different tactically

2024-09-03 12:55:02

After what was an underwhelming start for the reigning Spanish and European champions, Real Madrid secured three points against Real Betis last night, courtesy of a brace from French talisman Kylian Mbappe. It was a commanding victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, but the team has yet to reach its full potential.

Despite a solid performance, Real Madrid still appear frail and have yet to find the right combination to compete. Given the depth of talent they possess, it is quite surprising that the Spanish giants are dropping points against mid-table clubs. The team continues to feel the absence of German midfielder Toni Kroos, a void that has been evident even after four matchdays.

Last night, Carlo Ancelotti made a slight tweak to his starting lineup by including Dani Ceballos into the playing XI. This change allowed Federico Valverde to offer his services higher up the pitch in the final third. Whenever one of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., or Rodrygo lost possession, Valverde would be on the lookout to regain possession as soon as he could. This tactical shift also enabled Mbappe to finally score his long-awaited goal in La Liga after a superb assist from Valverde.

Currently, the team relies heavily on Vinicius Jr. to create opportunities rather than quickly switching flanks and using him as an in-behind runner. Vinicius is now often seen dropping deep to carry the ball into the final third. The team is now filled with ball carriers who look to advance the ball into the final third rather than make a few quick passes behind the defense. The inclusion of Dani Ceballos is expected to provide more balance, as the club aims to avoid overburdening the Croatian veteran Luka Modric in what could likely be his final season.

Mbappe, who finally ended his goalless drought in the Spanish League, looked dangerous after being actively involved in numerous offensive actions. The player attempted 24 shots prior to finally getting his well-deserved brace and breaking the deadlock against Real Betis. These goals also secured some crucial points for the Spanish side, preventing them from falling behind in the title race early in the season.

Despite these tactical adjustments, Real Madrid are still not entirely convincing after four matchdays have passed. They continue to try and find the optimal combination to play. With the recent injury news concerning Ceballos, Eduardo Camavinga, and Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid now have depleted options in midfield. They may now have to rely on Arda Guler or Modric to fill in the gaps. With the Champions League just 13 days away, the reigning champions must stay vigilant and ensure they are prepared to reclaim their throne this season.
