A farmer couple and their two college-going children died hours after they consumed home-made chapati, salad and mutton dish for dinner in their house in Kallur village of Raichur district, about 420km from Bengaluru, Thursday.
The deceased are Bhimanna Bagli, 60, wife Eramma, 54, and children Mallesha, 19, and Parvati,17. One more person, Mallamma is in a coma, Kallur village is 22km from Raichur district headquarters.
Ruling out any foul play or suicide pact, Raichur deputy commissioner Nitish K told TOI the food they consumed may have had harmful toxins.Sources said the family members had dinner together and complained of uneasiness well past midnight.
On hearing the commotion, neighbours rushed them to Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences in a critical condition and the victims died following multiple organ failure around 3am Friday.
The food samples were collected and sent to Forensic Science Laboratories, Hyderabad, for examination. Sirawar Police were awaiting the postmortem report to ascertain the cause of the deaths.
