Heatwave in India: Zomato has a request from customers

As India experiences an extreme heatwave, online food delivery platform Zomato has a special request from its customers. Zomato urged people to only order food in the peak afternoon only when absolutely necessary.
“Please avoid ordering during peak afternoon unless absolutely necessary,” Zomato wrote in a post on X.

How people reacted on Zomato’s ‘request’

While some appreciated the gesture, the request did not go down well with others.
“Close down the services between 12 to 4. Its okay to be human sometimes before profits. Yeah we won’t order, but still closure from you will do more good,” a user noted.

“Why don’t instead suspend your services during peak afternoon?,” a user said.

“Is it even real? Though I appreciate the concern, lunchtime orders cannot be postponed to dinner time. If so, Zomato needs to identify “absolutely necessary” orders and not-so-necessary orders,” another user posted.

“Bro, you are in food services and people order food when it is absolutely necessary. If you actually care about your employees, you would be posting “Our services are unavailable during peak afternoon hours,” a user said.

“Wow a food delivery app asking its customers not to order in the afternoon, what about those who stays alone? If you’re really that concerned about the well being of the delivery guys, increase their incentives, you guys already charge Platform fee on every order to pay Goyal’s bills,” another one said.

According to a report by The Times of India, heatwave in India has caused at least 61 deaths from heat stroke across many states as of May 31. Of those deaths, 23 were poll workers who were engaged in the final phase of the Lok Sabha election.
