Follow live coverage as Newcastle United face Arsenal today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.
The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola’s side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United’s latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year – yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.
Meanwhile, it’s Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:
Newcastle United FC 1 – 0 Arsenal FC
14:36
Following a display of total commitment and togetherness, Newcastle United emerge with maximum points from this Premier League clash against faltering title contenders Arsenal. It ends 1-0 to the hosts at St. James’ Park, where a moment of pure quality effectively decided the outcome: Gordon’s wonderful cross was converted by Isak’s towering header early in the first half. Arsenal rarely threatened to equalise, with Rice missing perhaps their best chance late on, though the xG ended in their favour – 1.11 to Newcastle’s 0.75. Having only lost one of their first 25 league games in 2024, winning 21, the Gunners have now lost two of the last three and could fall eight points behind the leaders this weekend. Up to eighth – for now, at least – Newcastle will visit Nottingham Forest next week, while Arsenal must tackle Inter and then Chelsea over the coming days. That’s all for today’s live coverage, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!
14:28
FULL-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 1-0 ARSENAL
14:27
Yellow Card Kai Lukas Havertz
14:26
MISS! Rice spurns a great chance to equalise! Saka’s superb inswinging cross is delivered on the spot for his team-mate, who arrives unmarked in the box. However, Rice glances a first-time attempt narrowly wide of the left-hand post! He really should have scored there – Newcastle breathe again!
14:25
Substitution Bruno Guimarães Rodriguez Moura Lloyd Casius Kelly
14:24
Yellow Card Nicholas David Pope
14:23
Not quite replicating his stunning strike against Preston in midweek, Nwaneri cuts inside and lashes a wild shot well over the crossbar. That really sums up Arsenal’s attacking efforts today.
14:22
There will be at least five more minutes for Newcastle fans to endure, as their team cling on to three precious points. So far, they’ve stood firm and rarely looked like caving in to Arsenal’s limited pressure.
14:20
Shortly after leaving the bench, Barnes hits the right byline and stand up a cross for Joelinton, who arrives at the back post; however, his header is sent straight at Pope.
14:19
Yellow Card Jorge Luiz Frello Filho
14:16
Back on defensive duty, Gordon sneaks in to rob Gabriel Jesus of the ball deep inside Newcastle’s area. It was an inviting cross by Saka, from the right, but Arsenal’s substitute striker just couldn’t get his shot away.
14:16
Substitution Thomas Teye Partey Jorge Luiz Frello Filho
14:15
Substitution Anthony Michael Gordon Harvey Lewis Barnes
14:14
Hall does just enough to beat Saka in an aerial challenge at the back post, after Zinchenko sends over a threatening cross. Newcastle’s defending has been top-notch today, and they are now within a whisker of getting their reward.
14:13
Rice delivers a free-kick from the right wing, which is blocked away by Hall. Newcastle then break away on the counter, but Gordon delays too long when he hits the final third, allowing Gabriel to slip in and steal the ball.
14:12
Opta’s live win-predictor suggest that Arsenal’s chances of victory have dwindled down to just 4%. Can the Gunners at least salvage a point from this game, having been off-colour throughout?
14:09
Having shaken off his minor injury, Pope restarts play with a long goal-kick upfield. Newcastle are now within minutes of winning consecutive Premier League home games against Arsenal for just the second time, after a run of three from 1993 to 1996.
14:08
Pope has picked up a knock, so the action is paused once again. He receives medical treatment in the form of some ‘magic spray’, as Howe and Arteta dispense some tactical advice to their players.
14:06
Saka is momentarily left rolling around in pain, after landing awkwardly following an aerial challenge. Fortunately for Arsenal, their main man is able to run it off and rejoin the fray. Time is running out if they are to turn this game around, though.
14:02
Gordon and Longstaff link up on the right flank once again, and the latter wins a corner by thudding the ball off Gabriel. It comes to nothing, though, as Saka eventually hammers the ball into touch.
14:01
Substitution Jurriën David Norman Timber Benjamin William White
14:01
Yellow Card Sandro Tonali
14:00
Another Rice corner from the left is sent over the crowded six-yard box and into the path of Trossard, who has been left unmarked. However, his volley thumps into a defender and Newcastle then mop up any danger.
13:57
JUST WIDE! With Arsenal lacking inspiration, Rice takes matters into his own hands, driving forward and reaching the Newcastle area. He then pulls a low shot narrowly wide of the right-hand post!
13:56
Yellow Card Jurriën David Norman Timber
13:56
SAVE! When the ball runs loose in midfield, following a Nwaneri tackle, it falls nicely for Isak. He needs no invitation to take a few strides forward before testing Pope with a rasping low strike. The goalkeeper palms it away!
13:55
Substitution Joseph George Willock Sandro Tonali
13:53
Yellow Card Joseph George Willock
13:51
Substitution Mikel Merino Zazón Oleksandr Zinchenko
13:51
Already in deep discussions with his staff, Arteta seems to be readying some substitutes. It’s been lacklustre stuff from Arsenal so far, despite a slight tactical tweak at half-time.
13:51
Substitution Gabriel Teodoro Martinelli Silva Ethan Chidiebere Nwaneri
13:50
Allowed to progress up the left without any challenge, Willock eventually makes his way to the edge of the area. After opening some space with a stepover, he drives his rising shot from a tight angle high over Raya’s crossbar.
13:47
Roared on by their fans, Newcastle are closing down with great commitment and snapping into tackles. The early goal has boosted their confidence, on the back of Wednesday’s cup win, and they’ve carried that through the rest of this match.
13:47
Yellow Card Mikel Merino Zazón
13:44
Gordon, Livramento and Longstaff combine down the right flank, which has been a fruitful route for the Magpies today, and earn a corner. However, Saliba heads the ball clear from Gordon’s subsequent set-piece delivery.
13:43
Arsenal have had much more of the ball since half-time, but they are yet to create any openings. The Opta win-predictor now has their chances of victory at just 15%, while Newcastle have a 56% likelihood of claiming three points.
13:40
While the hosts’ recent form has been below par, recent history favours their chances of getting the job done: Newcastle have won two of their last three Premier League home games against Arsenal, which is as many as they managed in the previous 19.
13:39
Straight after kick-off, Gordon races forward and slips Willock into a shooting position, just inside the area. However, the ex-Arsenal midfielder’s attempt is fairly tame and Raya makes a straightforward stop.
13:36
Arsenal kick off, and we are back under way at St. James’ Park!
13:30
This is the first time in 29 Premier League games that Arsenal are trailing at half-time, a run dating back to December 2023, when they went on to lose against West Ham. What will their response be after the break? The natural response would be to throw men forward in search of an equaliser, but having lost their defensive discipline of late, that approach has its pitfalls. Remember, the Gunners have conceded multiple goals in four of their last five top-flight matches.
13:26
Rewarded for their intensity and endeavour, Newcastle United lead 1-0 at St. James’ Park, as Arsenal’s Premier League woes continue. The standout moment of an absorbing first half came in the 12th minute, as Gordon delivered an inch-perfect cross for Isak to head home in sublime fashion; adding to both men’s catalogue of goal involvements on Tyneside turf. Although the Magpies then relied on Hall to block Merino’s goalbound strike at close range and actually trail the xG – with 0.44 to the Gunners’ 0.61 – their lead at the break is fully merited. As things stand, Arteta and co could be set to fall further behind in the title race – but 45 minutes is a long time in football.
13:20
HALF-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 1-0 ARSENAL
13:19
After Pope punches away an inswinging cross from the left, Arsenal recycle the ball and build again. Eventually, Merino drifts a tame left-footed cross straight towards Newcastle’s goalkeeper, who safely gathers the ball to his chest.
13:18
There will be at least three minutes of stoppage time added to the end of this half, which has flown by. While there have been few clear-cut chances, it’s been a pleasingly open contest.
13:17
A rare error by Gordon wastes a good chance for Newcastle to load another ball into Arsenal’s area, as his free-kick from the left is easily cut out by the first defender. Still, it has been an otherwise impressive first-half performance by the England winger, who set up Isak’s goal.
13:14
Rice delivers a free-kick from the right flank, which curls over the masses inside Newcastle’s box. Partey then picks the ball up out on the left, and his curling cross swings well wide of the far post.
13:10
Yellow Card Fabian Lukas Schär
13:09
With a pained expression, Bruno Guimaraes returns to the fray and moves back into his position. While he’s still jogging into place, Trossard overhits a pass through the centre, missing a well-timed run by Saka.
13:08
Soon after Martinelli gets a stern talking-to by the referee, the action is halted again. Bruno Guimaraes clips Merino’s boot with an attempted clearance and drops to the turf in some agony. The game is paused, so both teams take on drinks while Newcastle’s Brazilian midfielder receives treatment.
13:05
Rice swings in another corner-kick from the left, again trying to pick out a back-post run, but Newcastle manage to survive it when two Arsenal players get in each other’s way.
13:03
Arsenal are now trying to retain possession and build more momentum, having been set back by Newcastle’s intensity during the opening half-hour. So far, the Gunners have had 54% of the ball.
13:02
OFF THE LINE! Following a post-corner scramble in Newcastle’s six-yard box, Merino reacts first to meet a nod-down. He lashes a quick volley at goal, which strikes Hall on the back, with Pope flying across his line as cover! So close to an Arsenal equaliser!
12:59
Guiding a dangerous whipped cross by Saka over the crossbar and behind for a corner, Schar lunges into his six-yard box and risks an own-goal. Ultimately, it’s good defending from the Swiss centre-back.
12:57
Rice fails to beat the first man from another left-sided corner, striking Gordon. Arsenal have to shuffle back quickly as a result, before Gordon reaches the Gunners’ right byline on the counter-attack. His threatening cross is deflected wide by Timber, earning Newcastle a corner-kick.
12:55
Bruno Guimaraes uses some smart footwork to outwit Trossard around 25 yards out from goal, and he then shoots at the target. It clips Willock, though, and is easily fielded by Raya.
12:54
Another lovely delivery from Gordon, stationed out on the right, almost picks out Joelinton’s run at the far post. Ultimately, it just misses and rolls along the byline before hitting the corner flag.
12:51
Following some patient build-up play by the visitors, Havertz stands up an inviting cross from the left, and Saka leaps above Hall at the back post. However, the Arsenal winger can’t control his header which flies comfortably wide of the near post.
12:49
Arteta looks concerned on the touchline, as Arsenal have now conceded the opening goal in three of their last four Premier League games – as many as throughout the previous 25. They’ve got to try and fight back from behind.
12:47
This calendar year, only Erling Haaland (24), Cole Palmer (21) and Jean-Philippe Mateta (17) have scored more Premier League goals than Isak (16), whose superb header recalled past efforts by another Newcastle striker, Alan Shearer.
12:44
Assist Anthony Michael Gordon
12:44
When Timber pops up in a central position, not far outside of the area, Arsenal have an extra man in attack. The Dutch defender lays a low pass off for Saka on the right, but the latter scuffs his low finish into the side-netting.
12:43
Goal Alexander Isak
12:41
Arsenal win a corner on the left-hand side, taken by Rice. He swings in a cross towards the goal-line, but Pope reaches up above a sea of bodies to punch it clear of immediate danger.
12:40
After a nod-down falls to Merino, around 30 yards from goal, the former Newcastle midfielder slings his leg at an optimistic volley, which flies wildly wide of the target. The home fans enjoyed that.
12:37
Bruno Guimaraes drives to the left byline and his cutback is blocked behind by Gabriel, earning Newcastle a corner. However, it comes to nothing and Arsenal win a free-kick for a foul on Saka.
12:35
Arsenal start brightly, and Trossard tries his luck from mid-range. He drags a hopeful early shot well wide of the target, drawing jeers from the home fans.
12:34
Last season’s meeting between these clubs on Tyneside was particularly controversial, as Gordon’s goal decided the game following three separate VAR checks. Arteta then called those decisions a “disgrace” in his post-match interview. Will today’s game prove similarly eventful?
12:32
Wearing their customary black-and-white stripes, the hosts kick off: we’re under way in Newcastle!
12:29
The players are out on the pitch at St. James’ Park, and kick-off in this Premier League contest is now just moments away!
12:24
Arsenal’s first choice centre-back pairing are reunited today, as Gabriel is fit to start after being forced off against Liverpool, while Saliba returns from a Premier League suspension; nursing a minor knee problem, White drops to the bench. Martin Odegaard, Riccardo Calafiori, Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu are still confined to the treatment room.
12:24
Newcastle’s star striker Isak has been passed fit to start, again joining Joelinton and Gordon in the final third. Tonali is among four men who drop to the bench following Wednesday’s cup win, as Bruno Guimaraes comes back in. Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy are all sidelined by injury.
12:19
SUBS: Neto, Ben White, Gabriel Jesus, Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jorginho, Raheem Sterling, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri.
12:19
ARSENAL (4-2-3-1): David Raya; Thomas Partey, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Jurrien Timber; Mikel Merino, Declan Rice; Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli; Kai Havertz.
12:14
SUBS: Martin Dubravka, Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Emil Krafth, William Osula, Miguel Almiron, Lloyd Kelly, Alex Murphy, Lewis Miley.
12:08
NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-3-3): Nick Pope; Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Lewis Hall; Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes, Joe Willock; Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, Joelinton.
12:08
Continuing their recent stutter, Arsenal faltered against Liverpool last week, letting a half-time lead slip and ultimately settling for a 2-2 draw. That saw the Gunners lose more ground in the title race, leaving them third in the Premier League table with a five-point deficit to leaders Manchester City. In midweek, Mikel Arteta’s men were 3-0 winners over Preston North End, joining Newcastle in the last eight of the EFL Cup.
12:08
On Wednesday night, Newcastle United saw off a much-changed Chelsea team to make the EFL Cup quarter-finals, earning a home tie against Brentford. Eddie Howe’s side will aim to use that success as a springboard towards improved results in the Premier League; their 2-1 loss to the same opponents last weekend made it five top-flight games without a win. With just two points taken from the last 15 available, the Magpies only occupy 12th place in the table.
