Second storm follows Hurricane Beryl, concerns Gulf Coast

2024-07-02 05:40:01

All eyes are on Hurricane Beryl as it approaches Grenada, the Grenadines, St. Vincent and other Windward Islands. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned residents to “take action now to protect your life,”…”this is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation,” in the Grenadines and on Carriacou Island in their 10 a.m. update. The hurricane should make landfall within the hour.

The major hurricane will pass through the Windward Islands in about 12 hours, and conditions there should improve this evening. At that point, the damage will be assessed, and repairs will commence.

Hurricane Beryl will move northwestward, but should remain south of the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica. However, they are still likely to experience tropical storm force winds.

After Jamaica, Hurricane Beryl is likely to make landfall again in the Mexican Yucatan. Fortunately, the NHC is forecasting the storm to downgrade to a weaker hurricane. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surge can be expected by the weekend across major tourist destinations including Cancun, Cozumel, and Merida.

The system will move over the peninsula and will likely move into the warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico. There it could use some of the water to strengthen up once again, and potentially make a third landfall on the eastern coast of Mexico.

Today’s spaghetti models are showing the potential for a northerly shift for Beryl once it makes it to the Bay of Campeche. Texans should pay attention to this storm as conditions in the Gulf of Mexico are prime for storms to strengthen. While it is surely too far in advance to predict exact impacts of Beryl on Texas, there will be the possibility of heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and of course coastal impacts such as rough surf, and rip currents.

Furthermore, there is another storm a few hundred miles behind Hurricane Beryl that will follow a similar path.

If the system moves into favorable conditions, this is another potential system that could bring impacts to Texas. We are still about two weeks from any impacts from the second storm if it has the opportunity to strengthen.
