The home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah, Gujarat is one of the key political arenas of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
All the 26 seats in the state went to the polls in a single phase on May 7. Counting of votes will be on June 4.
Gujarat is the bastion of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The party’s dominance in Gujarat was re-established in 2019 when it managed to win all 26 seats for the second consecutive time. However, it is notable that BJP has dropped five sitting MPs this time around, highlighting a strategic shift.
The opposition parties including, the Indian National Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and other regional parties of the state seemed to have failed in reclaiming their grounds in the state. Earlier in 2019 as well as 2014, INC faced a major setback as it failed to win any seats in Gujarat.
While the Congress had fielded candidates from 23 seats, its INDIA bloc ally AAP is contesting from 2 seats. The Samajwadi Party is also fighting from 1 seat.
In the assembly elections in 2022, the Bharatiya Janata Party won a super majority of 156 seats – the most ever won by any party in Gujarat’s history. Meanwhile, Congress fell to its lowest count in the state for three decades and the Aam Aadmi Party gained five seats.
