LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Are you watching a scary movie tonight on Halloween? One of the top scary movie franchises is Scream. During a stop in WAVE Country, actor David Arquette talked about Scream with fans and sat down with me for an exclusive interview.
“Ghostface is a timeless character,” Arquette said. It was 1996 when David Arquette was cast in the first Scream. “We had no idea it would be this huge phenomenon at all. We didn’t know what it was going to be really,” Arquette recalls. “Changed the course of my life. I was supposed to die in the first film.” But Deputy Dewey Riley didn’t die. He was also in Scream 2, 3, 4 and 5. Arquette said originally the character was written as a jock. But Arquette told director Wes Craven he thought he could play that character well.
“It’s the most impactful film I’ve been a part of,” Arquette said. “Being able to play a character over a span of 25 years or something, you don’t get that opportunity that often.”
Arquette thinks the franchise is so successful because the movies took fans’ love for horror films into account. He also said the fight scenes with Ghostface involved a lot of stunts.
“Doing these films are amazing,” Arquette said. “And when you see the real Ghostface, even though I’ve done all the films, ‘I’m like ooh, there’s Ghostface. There he is.’” Arquette said he loves meeting fans, just as he did on this night at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. “With Scream 5 and relaunching it with this whole, sort of young generation, I don’t know, if just got new legs and people discovered the old ones, and we have all these different age fans now, it’s pretty amazing,”
Arquette said. It was a screening of Scream 5 that his 20-year-old daughter with Courtney Cox, Coco, realized how big Scream is.
“Usually, it’s kind of embarrassing to your kids. But for her to be like, ‘oh wow,’ that was a really proud moment.” His two young boys haven’t seen the movie yet. But last Halloween 10-year-old Charlie and 7-year-old Gus dressed as Ghostface and Dewey.
“He looks just like me,” Arquette said. “We put a little mustache on. It was hilarious.”
Arquette and his wife Christina now live down Interstate 65 in Nashville.
“We have mini horses, mini pigs, mink two little ducks, mini ducks, mini donkeys,” Arquette said.
Arquette is still acting. He will be in The Holy Trinity and Mob Cops. And on the side, he’s also a painter.
“I’m a certified Bob Ross instructor,” Arquette said. “I know it’s random.”
Arquette has Dewey to thank for a lifetime of action. When asked about a return in Scream 7, Arquette said, “It’s a horror movie, so anything’s possible.”
You’ll have to wait a bit for Scream 7. It’s expected to be released in February 2026.
