For hours, Verizon has been experiencing a huge outage affecting its mobile services across the country.
“During the incident we received reports from Paducah, Birmingham, Fairhope, Foley, Mobile, Montgomery, Pelham, Phenix City, Trussville, Valley, Bella Vista, Benton, Bentonville, Brookland, Des Arc, Fayetteville, Heber Springs, Hot Springs Village, Rogers, Searcy and 1678 other cities,” according to a website tracking the outage.
At one point, there were more than 100,000 user reports of problems on Downdetector. Downdetector’s outage map shows hotspots in many places, including New York and Atlanta. Based on that map, it appears as though the outages are more prevalent on the East Coast.
“We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers,” Verizon spokesperson Ilya Hemlin said in a statement to The Verge at 11:24AM ET today. “Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue.”
At 4:47PM ET, Hemlin shared a followup statement. “Verizon engineers are making progress on our network issue and service has started to be restored. We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience some of our customers experienced today. We continue to work around the clock to fully resolve this issue.”
The company’s support account is also replying to people expressing complaints; many users are reporting that account that their phones are in SOS mode. According to that account, “the outage is affecting some customers’ Data, Voice, and Text services.”
“We’re aware of a Verizon outage impacting customers in parts of the country,” the Federal Communications Commission says in a post on X. “We are working to determine the cause and extent of these service disruptions.”
Updates, September 30th: Added Verizon and FCC statements, updated the quote about reports of which cities affected, noted that Downdetector shows more than 100,000 user reports.
