The Big Ten Network showed a telling statistic during its broadcast of Iowa football vs. Illinois State on Saturday.
According to the BTN graphic, Hawkeyes wide receivers caught only two touchdowns in 2022 and three in 2023, yet quarterback Cade McNamara connected three times with wideouts during Iowa’s domination over the Redbirds.
A pair of those scores went to true freshman WR Reece Vander Zee, both of which came in the third quarter. The CLGLR (Central Lyon/George-Little Rock) graduate from Rock Rapids took advantage of an injury to Seth Anderson and suspension of Kaleb Brown to enjoy a breakout performance, catching five passes for 66 yards.

“He’s gonna be the most popular guy in his Rhetoric class next week. Or Intro to Biology,” Hawkeyes radio analyst Pat Angerer said during the broadcast.
Former Iowa star Cooper DeJean provided his stamp of approval as well.
