How Many Does Team USA Have?

The Paris Olympics are fully underway and multiple members of Team USA have already earned gold, silver and bronze medals. 

As of Tuesday, the United States is leading the medal count with 28 medals, followed by host country France with 22 and Great Britain with 17.

Katie Ledecky earned her first medal of the Summer Games on July 27 when she placed third in the women’s 400-meter freestyle, and will go for gold in the 1500m race on Tuesday afternoon. Ledecky has 11 Olympic medals and could become the most decorated female swimmer of all time if she earns two more.

On July 29, the men’s gymnastics team had a historic day after earning its first team medal at an Olympic Games since 2008. 

Brody Malone, Frederick Richard, Paul Juda, Asher Hong and Stephen Nedoroscik cheered each other as they showed off their skills on the floor, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. The men’s gymnastics team ended the day with a bronze model while Japan took home gold and China was awarded the silver medal. 

On July 30, Simone Biles became the most decorated American gymnast in the history of the Olympic Games after she and U.S. teammates Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera won gold in the women’s gymnastics team final event. Biles now has eight medals across three Olympic Games.

Biles, Ledecky and all the other Olympians who have received medals in the past few days get to bask in their moment of glory on top of the podium. 

This year, the athletes are receiving custom medals, which were designed by French jewelry house Chaumet, that have an 18-gram hexagonal chunk of iron from the Eiffel Tower embedded in each of them, the official Olympics website says. 

Each medalist is receiving a gold box that includes the official poster for the 2024 Paris Olympics as well, according to the Olympics website. 

That’s not all. The athletes will also be given a mascot plush toy — a miniature version of the Phryges — that is decorated with their specific medal color and says “Bravo” in French, the website reports.
