General Upendra Dwivedi, an esteemed infantry officer with extensive operational experience, assumed command of the Indian Army on Sunday. Hailing from Madhya Pradesh, General Dwivedi brings a distinguished career and a wealth of expertise to his new role. He is the 30th Army Chief and belongs to the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. He has also been serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff from February this year.

Early Life and Education

Born in Madhya Pradesh, General Dwivedi attended Sainik School in Rewa. He joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in January 1981 and was commissioned into the 18th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles on December 15, 1984. Throughout his military education at NDA and Indian Military Academy (IMA), he excelled in sports and physical training, earning multiple accolades.

Career Highlights

General Dwivedi’s career is marked by significant achievements across various terrains and operational theaters, including the deserts of Rajasthan, the high altitudes of Jammu and Kashmir, and the riverine and built-up areas in the North East. He commanded his battalion in active counter-terrorism operations and held key positions such as Inspector General of Assam Rifles and Sector Commander, where he led intense counter-terrorism operations and contributed to Indo-Myanmar border management.

Leadership and Command Roles

As a Major General, General Dwivedi commanded the Rising Star Corps along the Western Front and later led the Northern Army from 2022 to 2024. During his tenure, he provided strategic guidance and operational oversight for sustained operations along the Northern and Western borders. He also played a pivotal role in modernizing the Indian Army, promoting the induction of indigenous equipment, and enhancing infrastructure development in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Technological Advancements

Known for his enthusiasm for technology, General Dwivedi has been instrumental in advancing automation and integrating emerging technologies within the Indian Army. As Deputy Chief, he championed the use of big data analytics, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and blockchain solutions to enhance the Army’s capabilities.

International Experience and Education

General Dwivedi’s international experience includes tenures in Somalia with HQ UNOSOM II and as a Military Advisor to the Government of Seychelles. He has attended prestigious institutions, including the Staff College in Wellington, the Higher Command Course at AWC, Mhow, and the USAWC in Carlisle, USA, where he was conferred the title of ‘Distinguished Fellow.’

Personal Life

General Dwivedi is married to Sunita Dwivedi, a science graduate and homemaker. She has been actively involved with Aarushi, an institute for children with special abilities in Bhopal. The couple has two daughters, both of whom work with NGOs.
