Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary was named the new president of the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit, with his election being formally announced by Union Minister Piyush Goyal in Lucknow on Sunday, 14 December.
Chaudhary was named the BJP UP unit’s new president in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak.
Who is Pankaj Chaudhary?
– The new BJP president of Uttar Pradesh, Pankaj Chaudhary, hails from Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi’s constituency of Gorakhpur. He belongs to the Kurmi community, categorised under Other Backwards Classes (OBC).
– Chaudhary’s political journey began in 1989 as a member of the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation. He was first elected to the 10th Lok Sabha from the Maharajganj Lok Sabha constituency in 1991.
– The newly appointed Uttar Pradesh BJP unit’s new state president won the Lok Sabha elections seven times from the Maharajganj seat.
– According to a report by PTI, Pankaj Chaudhary is considered a close confidant of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Pankaj Chaudhary sole candidate in the fray
Chaudhary filed his nomination for the post on Saturday and was reportedly the sole candidate in the fray. He submitted the papers to former Union minister and BJP state election officer Mahendra Nath Pandey and central election observer Vinod Tawde.
Adityanath, his two deputies, and Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh were present during the filing of the nomination.
BJP leaders congratulated Chaudhary on his appointment and expressed confidence in the party’s prospects under his leadership in the state where assembly polls will be held in 2027.
Cabinet Minister Dara Singh Chauhan said the party would scale new heights under Chaudhary’s leadership, while MSME Minister Rakesh Sachan thanked the BJP’s national leadership for the decision and expressed confidence that the party would return to power in the state with a full majority in 2027, reported PTI.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other senior BJP leaders also extended their best wishes to Pankaj Chaudhary, expressing confidence that the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit would continue to strengthen under his leadership.
