Designer and entrepreneur Anita Dongre has collaborated with toy US-based company Mattel’s doll Barbie to create a limited edition Diwali themed doll. The doll wears Dongre’s clothing designs and has launched globally.
“Barbie and Anita Dongre are proud to unveil the all-new Barbie Signature Diwali doll, ahead of the Hindu Festival of Lights,” announced Barbie on Facebook. “Dressed in her finest lehenga designed by the world-class Indian couturier, this doll’s look pays homage to Anita’s heritage, and the time-honoured craftsmanship of the rural women artisans who sustain its traditions. May Barbie and Anita Dongre’s artistry illuminate your festivities now and for years to come.”
Anita Dongre’s Diwali Barbie wears a blue, lehenga style ensemble as a nod to Dongre’s signature contemporary, crafts focused design style and to Rajasthan’s signature aesthetics. The doll is designed to represent a modern Indian woman, according to the designer, who is the first Indian designer to work with Barbie on a ‘Signature Diwali Doll.’
“Mattel reached out to us over a year ago for this incredible project and I was thrilled with the prospect of being able to represent contemporary Indian fashion through a Diwali Barbie doll,” Anita Dongre told Elle India about the project. “Barbie has always been an aspirational, fashion icon through the decades. So it’s a special collaboration indeed!”
