Fashion design institute Pearl Academy collaborated with the Fashion Design Council of India to highlight social issues and explore innovative design on the runway on October 13. The ‘First Cut’ showcase took place as part of Lakmē Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI.
First Cut presented collections by Pearl Academy’s final-year fashion design students and explored the power women hold through garments. While some looks focused on warrior archetypes, others explored the fortitude of soft femininity.
“Our society has always celebrated strong women, whether through the worship of powerful goddesses or the legacy of trailblazing figures who fought against oppression,” said Pearl Academy’s president Aditi Srivastava in a press release. “However, as history has unfolded, we have witnessed a troubling shift- women have been mistreated and abused, yet their strength remains unshaken. Through this collection, we aim to remind the world that women must never be taken for granted. When wronged, they have always risen to reclaim their glory, and we, as a society, continue to stand with them.”
Lakmé Fashion Week in partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India ran from October 9 to 13 in New Delhi. The fashion week featured design contests, sustainable fashion showcases, and brought together designers and brands from across the country.
“In an industry where innovation and creativity are the driving forces, it is crucial to empower the younger generation with opportunities to lead the way,” said the Fashion Design Council of India’s chairman Sunil Sethi. “Our collaboration with Pearl Academy reflects our shared commitment to nurturing and elevating emerging talent. By providing these budding designers a platform at Lakmé Fashion Week, we are not only showcasing their fresh, bold ideas but also contributing to the future of fashion. We are proud to witness the remarkable creativity and vision that Pearl Academy students bring to the table, and we look forward to their continued success in shaping the global fashion landscape.”
