The internet couldn’t be more proud of Saoirse Ronan for “gagging” an all-male lineup of Hollywood stars and the host of BBC’s “The Graham Norton Show” with a very important reality check.
While appearing as a guest on the British talk show on Oct. 25 alongside fellow actors Eddie Redmayne, Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington, Ronan and the rest of the group discussed the topic of defending yourself against an attack.
Redmayne, who stars as an assassin in the new series “The Day of the Jackal,” said that a phone can be used as a weapon of defense.
Mescal then joked that his first instinct would not be to whip out his phone while being assaulted.
“Who is actually going to think about that? If someone actually attacked me, I’m not going to go ‘phone,’” the “Gladiator II” star mocked while motioning as if he were taking a phone out of his pocket.
Mescal’s joke prompted laughter from Redmayne, Washington and Graham Norton, as well as the audience.
“Can you hang on a second?” Norton teased while pretending to search his pockets for his phone and having a hypothetical conversation with an attacker.
Mescal responded by jokingly holding a phone up to his ear, adding, “Sorry, mum, one second. Bang.”
“That’s a very good point,” Redmayne replied, nodding in agreement.
Ronan then interjected, shutting the conversation down by simply reminding the men, “That’s what girls have to think about all the time.”
The mood instantly changed as the men fell silent and awkwardly agreed.
“Am I right ladies?” Ronan asked the crowd as they roared in approval.
Social media users on X, formerly called Twitter, showered the Irish actor in praise for pointing out the stressful precautions women have to take just to protect themselves from gender-based violence.
