Chris Hemsworth is spending his weekend at San Diego Comic-Con promoting his upcoming animated adventure, Transformers One, and he’s been hearing a lot of the speculation regarding his possible involvement in the upcoming crossover between the Transformers and the G.I. Joe universes.
Speaking with ET’s Denny Directo at the fan-packed event on Thursday, the 40-year-old actor addressed whether or not he’d even be interested in taking part in the hotly anticipated project, which is still in early stages of development.
“Look, I love the entire world and what that universe has to offer and the sort of potential to where you can take it creatively and the different characters you can explore,” Hemsworth shared. However, he noted that “nothing official” has been decided.
“There were sort of conversations and there were a few ideas presented and we’re, you know, in discussions about it,” Hemsworth shared. “So we’ll see what happens. But it all comes down to who the filmmaker is and if there’s a great script.”
“[Producer] Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who has been sort of at the helm of these films for so many years, is a dear friend of mine and I’ve spoken a lot to him about it,” he added. “So yeah, it’d be great if something comes together.”
As for his work on Transformers One — which is an animated prequel/origin story set on the planet Cybertron that tells the history of the Transformers race — Hemsworth voices the role of a young Optimus Prime.
Between his latest role in this project, his performance as Lord Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and his career-making role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hemsworth is close to being royalty at San Diego Comic-Con, and the star says he’s been feeling the love.
“It’s amazing! I haven’t been here probably since [Thor: Ragnarok], so like five years, and it brings back all the memories of you know 10 or 11 years ago when I first came here,” he said. “Every time, you’re nervous, there’s a lot of anticipation, a lot of excitement, and to have that kind of response is just brilliant.”
“And the fans are something else here, it’s crazy,” Hemsworth added, explaining that he’s already seen a few cosplayers dressed in elaborate Thor costumes. “Even in the heat! I was like, ‘That’s impressive.’ I know what that costume feels like in the heat. I’ve shot in Atlanta in the middle of summer with it on — it’s not fun.”
Transformers One — which also stars Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne and Jon Hamm — hits theaters Sept. 20.
