Amitabh Bachchan is one of the respected stars of the industry. With decades of experience under his belt, the actor has proved his mettle in every genre of cinema. Today, people look for every opportunity to associate their name with Big B. However, did you know there was a time when Amitabh Bachchan faced so many financial challenges that even his house was about to be seized?
Back in the 1990s, Amitabh Bachchan’s company went bankrupt and the scene was so bad that he had creditors coming at his door every day. In an old interview with Vir Sanghvi, the actor revealed that he was under Rs 90 crore debt and was on the verge of losing his house and all assets that were attached to his company.
Explaining how all his assets were about to be seized, he said, “So when you sign a personal guarantee, then you are personally liable to pay that and so there was about Rs 90 crore to be paid back.”
He further unveiled there were “about 55 legal cases” against him. Recalling the tough times he shared, “There were creditors on the door every day, very embarrassing, very humiliating.”
The ‘Kalki’ fame actor said that all those who earlier used to be very excited to get associated with his company turned hostile, humiliating, and rude. Further, explaining more about the debt he owned, he said a lot of it was with government institutions, banks, financial institutions, and personal loans. Some of them were erroneously guaranteed by him and his wife Jaya Bachchan personally.
Big B mentioned back then he was ill-advised, and was told nothing would ever happen. He trusted those words and ended up signing a few personal guarantees.
However, as they say, the only constant thing is change. Amitabh Bachchan’s time also changed when he signed ‘Mohabbatein.’ The movie helped him regain his lost reputation. In addition to this, the television show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ aided him a lot in getting back on his feet.
