“I believe he has been a great president,” Colbert said Monday. “He steered this country out of a horrific pandemic. He saved countless lives by encouraging people to get vaccinated. He brought the economy back. He rallied our allies. He reasserted America’s place in the world stage. And most inspiring of all, at no time was he Donald Trump.”
Colbert last week didn’t join the calls for Biden to step aside, but he did talk about the “courage” that Biden would need to choose self-sacrifice.
“I believe he is a good enough man, he is a good enough president, to put the needs of the country ahead of the needs of his ego,” he said at the time.
With Biden now out of the race, Colbert turned part of his “Late Show” monologue into a salute to the president ― and even retired his aviator sunglasses.
