Making its platform premiere on May 30, 2024, the British-Canadian YA drama Geek Girl has remained among Netflix’s most-watched new TV shows. The whimsically enchanting series concerns Harriet Manners (Emily Carey), a timid wallflower whose physical and social awkwardness makes her a target for high school bullies. The first 10 episodes follow Harriet as she opens up, gains confidence, falls in love for the first time, and launches an unlikely career as an overseas fashion model.
Although Geek Girl has yet to be renewed for a second season, Carey has stated that she believes there is more story to tell and is preparing to continue portraying Harriet. Until the series’ fate is known, the ending of Geek Girl deserves closer attention, especially the romance between Harriet and supermodel Nick Park (Liam Woodrum). Here’s everything about the Season 1 conclusion of Geek Girl and what it means for the series ahead.
Adapted from the first book in Holly Smale’s Geek Girl novel series, Geek Girl is a Netflix Original young-adult drama directed by Declan O’Dwyer. The story follows Harriet Manners (Carey), a shy, neurodivergent teenager who lacks confidence and is bullied at school for her social awkwardness. Harriet finds solace in her best friend Nat (Rochelle Harrington), her whimsical neighbor Toby (Zac Looker), her father Richard (Tim Downie), and step-mom Annabel (Jemima Rooper).
The inciting event of the feel-good teen Netflix series occurs when Harriet’s class earns a trip to London during Fashion Week. Despite her timidity, Harriet is an attractive young woman who catches the attention of modeling representatives Betty (Hebe Beardsall) and Wilbur (Emmanuel Imani). Betty and Wilbur recruit Harriet to model for Infinity Models, but Harriet refuses unless Nat is also accepted. Nat has had a lifelong dream of becoming a model, and Harriet shows what a loyal friend she is by sticking up for him.
In London, Harriet meets the dreamy supermodel Nick Park (Woodrum). Fashion designer and Nick’s aunt, Yuji (Sandra Yi Sencindiver), begins training Harriet and encourages her to take center stage at an upcoming fashion show. Although Harriet agrees, Nat is left behind when he is not chosen to perform. Meanwhile, Nick’s phony girlfriend Poppy (Daisy Jelley) begins bullying Harriet for taking her place in the show. Torn between protecting Nat and pursuing Nick, Harriet’s happiness depends on the final act.
Following London Fashion Week, Harriet pursues a modeling career further. Behind Nat and Annabel’s backs, Harriet and her father attend Canadian fashion shows to raise her profile. However, they stumble over several hurdles and Richard loses his job. Harriet picks up the slack by finding success as a model, but when Nat and Annabel discover that she’s been keeping secrets, they become upset with her.
Despite trouble with her friends and family, Harriet and Nick start dating each other. In Nick’s company, Harriet feels happy, confident, and comfortable enough to be herself without the public pressures and perceptions professional models face. Yet, Harriet’s euphoria is tamped by Poppy, who continues to bully her after discovering she and Nick are an item. An ugly confrontation between Harriet and Poppy occurs during a photo shoot for a perfume ad, and Harriet decides modeling is not in her best interest and quits.

The hit show manages to capture the essence of the Geek Girl novel as it follows Harriet Manners and her journey to self-discovery.
After quitting the event, Poppy is put in Harriet’s place for the next fashion show by Jude Paignton (Sarah Parish), the CEO of Infinity Models. Wilbur protests the decision and resigns when the company fails to rehire Harriet. Returning to school, Harriet is bullied again, led by mean girl Lexi (Mia Jenkins). This time, however, Harriet finds the strength and courage to stick up for herself, embrace her identity, and put the bullies in their places.
With the moral support of Nat and Toby, Harriet stands up to Lexi and the high school bullies by being her true, authentic self. Rather than put on a front for the public, Harriet embraces her identity as a Geek Girl with newfound confidence and reclaims the label as a badge of honor. Most uplifting, Harriet and Nick end up together and continue their romantic affair in the final episode of Geek Girl. Fortunately for Harriet, she need not choose between her love life and her professional career at the end of the acclaimed YA TV adaptation.
After standing up to Lexi and the school bullies who harassed her for years, Harriet finally overcomes the torment. In addition to continuing her romance with Nick, Harriet continues her modeling career. Nick and Wilbur convince Yuji to return Harriet to the company and perform in more fashion shows. No longer keeping secrets from her friends and family, Harriet tells Nat, Richard, and Annabel everything she’s been through and earns their blessing to continue her modeling career.

Netflix has no shortage of young adult shows on offer. But these 10 international series are must-watches.
Geek Girl ends with Harriet performing a successful and slightly awkward fashion show, reminding her of where she came from and foretelling where she’s headed. When the story concludes, Harriet finds true romance, overcomes her schoolyard torment, and confidently accepts her image as a model with a geeky side. Should Geek Girl be renewed for Season 2 on Netflix, the story would likely follow the second book in Smale’s novel series, Model Misfit, just as Season 1 followed Book 1. In Model Misfit, Harriet takes a summer modeling job in Japan, where her relationship with Nick is tested.
