The Boys Creator Says Its Time to Give Homelander Actor Antony Starr ‘An Emmy Already’

Summary

  • Creator Eric Kripke praises Antony Starr’s acting in
    The Boys
, believing he deserves an Emmy for his remarkable performance.
  • The hit series will end with Season 5, as Kripke sticks to his plan for a gory, epic climax, following the magical writing number rule of five.
  • Based on the comic series,
    The Boys
takes a dark and satirical look at corrupt superheroes, with a group of vigilantes fighting back against them.

Eric Kripke, the creator behind hit superhero series The Boys, cannot understand why Homelander actor Antony Starr has not won an Emmy Award yet. Discussing the actor’s performance with Variety, Kripke revealed that all the actors in the show have helped shape their respective characters through their performances, but that it’s Starr who truly astounds him and deserves to be honored with an Emmy.

“The short answer is all of them. I mean, one of the things I love most about television is your ability to evolve and adjust as dailies come in, and you can tailor the role. Once you see what the actor is comfortable with and what they excel at and where some of their blind spots are, you can really start playing to their strengths.

In Homelander’s example, Ant’s ability to give 16 facial expressions when another person gives one is just so astounding. Give that guy an Emmy already. I don’t understand why it hasn’t happened yet.”

Starr has received acclaim for his performance since the beginning of The Boys and has been the recipient of the Critics’ Choice Super Awards several times, as well as being nominated at the Saturn Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards. But, for Kripke, this is nowhere near enough to truly commend the actor for his work.

The Boys Will End With Season 5

Antony Starr does not have long to achieve that elusive Emmy, with The Boys now confirmed to come to an end with the upcoming season 5. The news that the hit series would end after one more outing broke earlier this month, with Krpike taking to social media just before the debut of season 4.

“#TheBoys Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season! Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax. Watch Season 4 in 2 DAYS, cause the end has begun!”

The Boys season 4 has not fared as well with audiences as previous seasons…

Following the initial announcement, Kripke has expanded on why he felt The Boys needed to end, citing a “wonky stupid screenwriter thing” and the idea that the numbers ‘3’ and ‘5’ make for the best number of seasons.

“Part of it is such a wonky stupid screenwriter thing but three and five are the big magical numbers for writing. Three is movie acts, TV acts are five. Jokes are a runner of three for five. Five just seems like a good round number. It’s enough to tell the story but also bring it to a climax without wearing out its welcome. It’s been hard because I haven’t been able to tell everyone. I was thrilled to finally be able to get the word out there.”

Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys takes place in a universe where super-powered individuals are recognized as heroes by the public and owned by the powerful corporation Vought International. However, outside their heroic personas, most of these so-called “heroes” are arrogant and corrupt, with the series focusing on the titular Boys, a group of vigilantes looking to keep the corrupted superheroes under control.

Starring Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Chace Crawford, Jessie T. Usher, and Nathan Mitchell,
The Boys
season 4 debuted its first three episodes on June 13 and will air the rest of its eight episodes on a weekly basis.
