Upcoming Crunchyroll Anime is the Perfect Black Clover Replacement Every Fan Should Watch

Summary

  • Black Clover’s core message is Asta’s determination despite his lack of magic talent, a premise shared by upcoming series Wistoria: Wand and Sword.
  • Black Clover may be underrated, but it has amassed a big fanbase for its innovative world and beloved characters.
  • Fans eagerly awaiting Black Clover’s season 5 can find solace in Wistoria, sharing the same director and promising animation quality.

Black Clover has become one of the most appreciated shōnen of its generation, steadily gaining recognition by adding twists to common anime tropes. Black Clover‘s core message is Asta’s determination: he doesn’t have a talent accepted by society, but he improves himself and jumps over all the obstacles in front of him. This is a premise that does not lose its strength and is shared by other amazing series, like the upcoming Crunchyroll anime Wistoria: Wand and Sword.

Black Clover is an underrated anime compared to other massively popular shōnen jump series, but it has amassed a big fanbase for its innovative magic world, action-packed fights, and beloved misfit characters.

Since Black Clover’s season 5 production hasn’t been confirmed yet, fans who are eagerly waiting for the return of the eccentric Black Bulls can find solace in the meantime with the new Crunchyroll anime of summer 2024 releasing on July 7, Wistoria: Wand and Sword, which promises to be the perfect replacement for Black Clover that every magic anime fan should watch.

Hit Fantasy Manga Looks Epic in New Trailer For Anime Adaptation

Bandai Namco Pictures has revealed a new PV for Wistoria: Wand and Sword, an adaptation of the manga written by Fujino Omori.

Wistoria: Wand and Sword Features a Magicless Protagonist in a World Ruled by Magic

Wistoria: Wand and Sword Proves That a Sword Can Be Mightier Than Magic.

Wistoria: Wand and Sword, produced by Bandai Namco, is based on the manga written by Fujino Omori, the same author of the popular franchise Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (Danmachi). Wistoria features a world dominated by magic with a protagonist who cannot use magic, Will Serfort, who enters the Regarden Magic Academy to reach the top and become a Magia Vende, very much in the style of Mash Burndead from Mashle, who strives to become a Divine Visionary, and Asta from Black Clover, who pursues the title of Wizard King.

Additionally, Will Sefort’s innate abilities made him a powerful swordsman, just like Asta. Wistoria shares many similarities with Black Clover: a main character who is constantly looked down upon and discriminated against, who fights using only his physical strength and creativity in combat, without traditional magic, and also has a gifted childhood friend, highlighting the importance of friendship and never giving up. However, it still has a lot of callbacks to Danmachi, since Will’s motivation is akin to Bell’s, working hard to catch up to his out-of-his-reach crush.

Wistoria: Wand and Sword and Black Clover’s Anime Share the Same Director

The Anime is Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, Who Works With a Highly Respected Team of Veterans.

Not only does its protagonist’s setting have a perfect Black Clover aftertaste, but the Wistoria anime also shares the same director, Tatsuya Yoshihara. Yoshihara is a brilliant director and animator who was in charge of the incredible adaptation of Chainsaw Man, giving Wistoria’s animation quality a positive expectation from fans. Black Clover animation, while it excelled at times, certainly suffered from not being a seasonal anime and the limitations of Studio Pierrot, but with Wistoria, Yoshihara could show fans what the Black Clover anime would have looked like with a more relaxed schedule and more resources.

Also, the creative team of Wistoria is full of veterans with impressive careers: Sayaka Ono (Code Geass) as character designer and animation director, who guarantees an aesthetic for the designs and colors far from generic, and Yuki Maeda (Your Lie in April) in charge of art direction, responsible for Black Clover settings. Naomi Nakano, the color designer of Chainsaw Man, will play the same role, and Yuki Hayashi, the legendary composer of Haikyuu!! and My Hero Academia, will be in charge of the soundtrack. This experienced line-up makes Wistoria a promising anime.

Wistoria borrows certain themes from Black Clover, but it has its own appeal, adding elements from Omori’s previous work, Danmachi, like dungeons and the tower in the middle of the city. This makes Wistoria the perfect series for fans to watch while waiting for Black Clover‘s season 5 and the upcoming season of Danmachi in winter 2024. Wistoria: Wand and Sword’s production team, in addition to its premise, makes it a strong candidate for the hit anime of the summer, Black Clover‘s successor for fans of the series, and a must-watch for those who like magical medieval worlds.
