The first official image has been revealed for the new Game of Thrones spin-off/prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as production is underway. The reveal comes as House of the Dragon (set 300 years before HBO’s original Game of Thrones) has begun airing its second season. The first-look photo was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter and showcases actor Peter Claffey (Bad Sisters) as Ser Duncan the Tall.
The series was originally titled The Hedge Knight, before the name was altered to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms earlier this year. Production on the new series is currently underway in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and you can check out the first-look image below:
Before taking up acting, Peter Claffey was a professional rugby union player, playing for the Ireland U20’s side. Claffey has appeared in some shows following his switch to acting, but A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be his largest role to date. Joining Claffey in the new series is Finn Bennett (True Detective), Bertie Carvel (Doctor Foster), Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things), Sam Spruell (Fargo), and Daniel Ings (The Gentlemen).
Alongside the first image and casting update, you can also check out the official description for the series below:
“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms is one of several new spin-off series set in the Game of Thrones universe. The new show slots between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon in the franchise’s timeline. Based on one of George R.R. Martin’s novellas, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows Dunk, a squire who wears the armor of his recently deceased hedge knight, and pretends to be Ser Duncan the Tall. While the story may seem like a fun diversion in the GOT universe, it actually has larger connection to the Game of Thrones series.

While the full connection hasn’t been revealed yet, as Game of Thrones fans are still waiting for George R.R. Martin to write the next book, readers already know that a descendant of Ser Duncan the Tall is a major character in Game of Thrones. Many readers assumed this to be Brienne of Tarth (played by Gwendoline Christie). Martin has confirmed her lineage is different, but Ser Duncan the Tall does have a connection to House Tarth.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will run for six episodes on HBO and Max. No release date or window has been announced yet.
