The eagerly awaited Tamil film ‘Thangalaan’ has premiered in theaters today, August 15, and is being showcased on a vast number of screens. Directed by Pa Ranjith, this film stars Chiyaan Vikram in the lead role and is set during the colonial period in India, highlighting the lives of individuals instrumental in the development of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). The film’s release has been met with an enthusiastic reception, with early screenings outside Tamil Nadu achieving record-breaking attendance. ‘Thangalaan’ is based on the true events that revolve around the lives of mine workers in the Kolar Gold Fields, Karnataka, and the film is reportedly based on the often-unheard and unexplored history of how the Dalits of Tamil Nadu mined and created the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) with their bare hands. The film also focuses on rewriting and reclaiming Dalit history through Pa Ranjith’s political and cinematic ways. ‘Thangalaan’ was announced in 2021 and the movie stars Vikram in the lead role as a fierce tribal leader who helps the British in excavating gold from his ancestor’s land which makes him face the wrath of an apparent sorceress.
