Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Boys Season 4.
Prime Video’s The Boys is set in a universe where superheroes are common place, extremely narcissistic, and often use their powers to get up to some R-rated (and beyond) antics. The show’s creator, Eric Kripke, has dialed the absurdity to 11 for his adaptation of Garth Ennis’ beloved comic series, and Prime Video has been surprisingly accommodating and supportive of his desire to constantly test the show’s age-rating. However, the creator recently revealed that there is one moment thathe was asked to tone down for Season 4 – which is currently releasing weekly on the streamer.
Kripke sat down with The Movie Dweeb to discuss the currently running season and revealed that one part of the show was a little too much for the producers at Amazon. The scene in question revolves around The Deep (Chace Crawford), a controversial staple of the superhero group The Seven, the Ruler of the Seven Seas, and an all-round lover of aquatic creatures (sometimes a bit too much). Part of the character’s ‘redemption’ arc in Season 3 included an amorous relationship with an octopus called Ambrosius (voiced by certified A-lister, Tilda Swinton). Kripke joked that, during production on Season 4, execs from Prime Video pulled him aside and asked him to tone down these scenes, saying:
“Funny enough, the only thing they said to me all season was – and we weren’t going to do it anyway – was ‘Can you just, maybe, not have The Deep f*cking an octopus in so many scenes?’ because bestiality is a real tricky line for standards.”
Hilariously, Amazon weren’t completely against its inclusion in Season 4, but they needed Kripke to limit the number of times that happens in the show’s future. He continued,
“And they said ‘we’re not saying you can’t do it. We’re just saying, can you be a little more elegant in how you depict it?'” Kripke then joked that, “Ambrosius and The Deep have moved on to the long-term marriage commitment part of their relationship. So there isn’t going to be a lot of hot sex anyway.”
The Most Shocking Moment in The Boys Is Yet To Come…
Across its three seasons, The Boys has contained its fair share of shocks, from A-Train literally running through someone in the first episode, to Homelander’s obsession with milk, to numerous, ridiculous adult scenes utilizing the supes’ powers. While the eagerly anticipated ‘Herogasm’ certainly shocked audiences in Season 3, Kripke has teased that the show’s most silencing moment is still to come.
Three episodes of the new season have already been released (with the rest arriving weekly) and the show has already provided some ridiculous, dumbfounding moments. But the show’s best/worst (depending on how you look at it), is still unreleased. The interviewer brought a previous quote where Kripke describes Season 4 as the “most batsh*t crazy think you’ve ever done.” The creator responded, teasing:
“The particular moments I was refferencing, you have not seen yet. So there are some crazy- it’s slightly misleading, because they’re not big moments. They’re these very little, intimate moments that, to this day, the particular moment I have in mind, I cover my mouth every single time I see it.”
