The Boys creator, Eric Kripke, has gone back and forth on how the future of the franchise could play out, but fans now have some definitive answers. The Boys first debuted on Prime Video in 2019, and has quickly become one of the streamer’s most popular original shows. With its first spin-off, Gen V, under its belt, and Season 4 of The Boys so close to release, Kripke has firmly outlined the future of the franchise.
The biggest question circling over the show’s head is how many seasons it will run for. For years, The Boys had a 5-season plan. However, Kripke admitted he could see the show going far beyond the original outline – as his other popular show Supernatural did. But it has recently been confirmed that The Boys will end after it’s fifth season, and new details about Season 5 have been announced.

Season 5 of The Boys will begin filming this November. Like the four seasons before it, Season 5 will also last for 8 episodes. Plot details are obviously being kept tightly under wraps as Season 4 is still unreleased. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Eric Kripke joked that he’s “excited to finally execute a 5-season plan.” Despite constantly shifting on whether The Boys will follow his original plan, Kripke revealed that Season 4 feels like the penultimate season of the show. He continued:
“That was part of my argument: No one can watch this season without feeling at the end like ‘It’s ending next year right?’ So we might as well announce it so people can watch it with that cool epic heading-toward-the-end feeling, which is what I’m hoping for.”
More Spin-Offs from The Boys Are in the Works
While The Boys will be ending sooner than some fans may have been hoping, that doesn’t mean Kripke’s time in the world of Vought and superheroes is ending completely. The announcement also came with news that several spin-off shows are in the works. One series has already been publicly announced; The Boys: Mexico. However, the series has hit a hurdle in finding a writer for the pilot. Kripke has accepted a pitch and a deal is being finalized, so news of the show’s move into production should hopefully come soon.

Gen V, the University set spin-off of The Boys, also appears to have a long and prosperous future, according to Kripke. The ending of Season 1 reportedly ties in closely with The Boys Season 4. The ending of Season 4 will also tie directly into Gen V‘s second season, which is currently in production. Kripke’s statement continued:
“This story of The Boys will not continue on. With any luck, Gen V will continue on, there will be hopefully a couple others in development that we’re talking about that can continue on, but The Boys story ends in season 5.”
