Netflix’s animated Arcane series is ramping up for its hotly anticipated second season with a new trailer, but fans are sad to discover it will be the show’s last. Based on characters from the League of Legends video game universe, Arcane tells the backstories of many of the game’s playable champions, including sisters Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell), Ekko (Reed Shannon), Caitlyn (Katie Leung), and many more. The series is one of the highest rated video game adaptations of all-time, earning four Emmys, and helped to break the dreaded ‘video game curse’ which has now given way to excellent adaptations of The Last of Us and Fallout.
The first full trailer for Season 2 just dropped online, and the new season will be picking up right after the shocking ending to Season 1. The new trailer teases Caitlyn’s hunt for justice after Jinx attacked Piltover’s council, presumably killing all of its members. War is brewing between Noxus and Piltover’s underground city of Zaun following the attack. Finally, and most dramatically, the trailer teases a spectacular showdown between estranged sisters Vi and Jinx, following the complicated end to their sororial relationship in Season 1. Check out the new trailer below:
Season 1 ended with Vi and Jinx’s relationship in a further state of disrepair, after Vi abandoned Jinx as a child during a heist gone wrong. This led to Jinx being taken in by underground kingpin Silko, who twisted her mind and transformed her into Piltover’s terrorist, responsible for multiple deaths. Despite meeting his end in Season 1’s finale, Silko (voiced by Jason Spisak) will be making some form of return in Season 2 – although these could be flashbacks.
Season 2 Will Be Arcane’s Last, But Not the End of the Story
As excited as fans were to get their hands on the first full trailer for Season 2, they were equally disheartened to learn it would mark the end of the beloved series. The trailer explicitly states that Season 2 will close out the saga. However, it will not be the last animated outing in the world of League of Legends. Series co-creator Christian Linke released a statement (via Variety) confirming that Season 2 was always the planned end for Arcane, but more stories are on the way in the future. His statement read:
”
Arcane
is just the beginning of our larger storytelling journey and partnership with the wonderful animation studio that is Fortiche. From the very beginning, since we started working on this project, we had a very specific ending in mind, which means the story of
Arcane
wraps up with this second season. But
Arcane
is just the first of many stories that we want to tell in Runeterra.”
