Sameera Reddy, Riya Sen, Vidya Balan, Shahid Kapoor: The Trendsetting Stars of 90s Music Videos |

Before Instagram fame and TikTok trends, 90s music videos were the ultimate launchpads for rising stars. This feature revisits how actors like Malaika Arora, Shahid Kapoor, and Namrata Shirodkar made their mark in iconic music videos, from Chaiyya Chaiyya to Aankhon Mein. Blending nostalgia with contemporary relevance, we explore how these videos captured India’s cultural pulse and still influence today’s music-video aesthetic. We’ll also have some fun speculating how these classic stars would’ve ruled today’s influencer-driven social media world!
Picture a young Shahid Kapoor stealing hearts in the catchy tune ‘Aankhon Mein Tera Hi Chehra,’ and then there’s Bipasha Basu, sizzling in Sonu Nigam’s infectious hit ‘Tera Milna.’ These stars brought their unique sparkle to the music videos that ruled the 90s, turning them into must-watch spectacles!
Back then, pop songs—mostly filled with dreamy romances—often outshined Bollywood tracks, creating a frenzy among fans. It was a golden era that introduced us to the charismatic Jas Arora and the ever-glamorous Malaika Arora in ‘Gur Naal Ishq Mitha,’ and the delightful charm of Sameera Reddy in ‘Aur Ahista.’ Those music videos were not just songs; they were the romantic escapades of our teenage dreams!
‘Aur Aahista Kijiye Baatein’
Looking through the lens of nostalgia often reveals a certain charm in many things, but Aur Aahista is a timeless gem that still brings a smile to your face. This enchanting song captures the essence of romance and simplicity, leaving listeners with warm feelings that linger long after it ends. Whether it’s a rainy day or a cozy evening, this song perfectly complements the simple pleasures of life.

Its charming storyline, inspired by O Henry’s renowned tale, The Gift of the Magi. However, in a delightful twist, the narrative was adapted to conclude on a sweeter note, diverging from O Henry’s original ending. This refreshing take adds a layer of warmth and happiness, making it even more memorable for viewers.
The entire narrative—centered around an Indian girl and an Australian boy falling in love—beautifully captures the innocence of romance. This longing for that untainted connection is something that resonates deeply with audiences, reminding us of simpler times and the magic of first love.

When asked about her fondest memory from filming ‘Aur Ahista’, Sameera Reddy told ETimes,
“My fondest memory of shooting Aur Ahista was that it was my first solo international trip to Sydney, Australia. I was young and wide-eyed, excited to see a new country. The music video was just something I did on the side; the main attraction was being in a new place. That trip started my love for travel, and I felt proud to do it through acting in a music video.”

Sharing her thoughts on the evolution of music videos since the 90s, Sameera added, “My video was at the edge of the 90s; it was 1999. At that time, it was a space where heroines were created, and item numbers weren’t prevalent. It was a sweet, innocent period, much like today’s Korean dramas. It focused on being lovesick and the nostalgia of fluttering feelings. Now, music videos have become too hardcore and fast. Everything is handed to you, leaving little to the imagination.”
If given the chance, would you consider returning to music videos? “I don’t think so; that time has passed. It created its value, and I want to leave it as a beautiful memory,” the actress averred. “However, if I could collaborate with any artist, I would love to work with someone like Hanumankind. I love Indian rap music and respect many rap artists across the country. That would be fun because, actually, nobody knows this, but I love rap, she added.
‘Gur Naal Ishq Mitha’
Remember the infectious charm of the song ‘Gur Naal Ishq Mitha’? It introduced us to Jas Arora’s playful smile, Malaika Arora’s stunning red heels, and that iconic dance move we all tried to master! Beyond its catchy beat, the song weaves a delightful tale of a young man who cleverly uses his sister’s wedding as the perfect backdrop to introduce his love to his parents. It’s a sweet mix of romance, family, and celebration that makes it unforgettable!

Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi
Singer Falguni Pathak captured the hearts of many with her 1998 hit, Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi. This catchy track quickly rose to cult status, earning her the title of Dandiya Queen, thanks to its vibrant beats and memorable lyrics. The song’s popularity continues to resonate with listeners, especially during festive seasons, as it embodies the spirit of traditional celebrations.
Riya was the bubbly girl-next door who fell for a guy while shopping for a concert. We remember how the guy helped Riya with her saree, when it got stuck in the car. The innocence in Riya’s eyes got us all obsessed with her.

Sharing her fondest memory from filming ‘Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi’, Riya Sen told ETimes, “My fondest memory from filming ‘Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi’ was shooting the part where all of us girls finally get to Falguni Pathak’s concert, and she actually called me up on stage. We had such an amazing time during the shoot; it truly has stayed in all our memories since then.”
She also spoke about how music videos have evolved since the 90s. “I feel like the music videos from the 90s were iconic. They had a unique charm and style. Today, there’s so much more than just music videos to explore, and creating something as iconic as back then would require a completely different thought process,” the actress stated.

When asked if she would consider returning to music videos, Riya added, “If I get the opportunity to feature in a great song, I would absolutely love to do a music video again! There are so many talented singers out there, from Diljit Dosanjh and AP Dhillon to Prateek Kuhad and various ghazal singers. I would be thrilled to collaborate with all of them!”
The actress made quite a splash in the 90s music video scene, not just in Falguni Pathak’s ‘Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi’, but also in several other iconic tracks. She showcased her charm in Asha Bhosle’s Jhumka Gira Re, a classic that highlights her dancing skills and vibrant persona.

Additionally, she appeared in ‘Jab Saamne Aa Jate Ho’ and ‘Kahin Kahin Se’, both duets with Jagjit Singh and Asha Bhosle, capturing the hearts of many. Riya also featured in Sonu Nigam’s ‘Jeena Hai Tere Liye’, which further cemented her status as a music video darling of the era.
‘Jaanam Samjha Karo’
Who doesn’t adore Asha Bhosle’s enchanting voice in this track? But it’s not just her vocals that steal the show! We absolutely love her as the whimsical fairy godmother, sprinkling magic all around. And let’s not forget the dreamy duo, Milind Soman and Helen Brodie, who charm us as they discover love among the vinyls in a record store. Sure, we might have outgrown fairy tales, but this delightful romantic escapade remains a treasured childhood memory that still brings a smile to our faces!

‘Meri Chunar Udd Udd Jaaye’
Long before Ayesha Takia graced our screens in ‘Socha Na Tha’, she captured hearts with her sweet smile and expressive eyes in Falguni Pathak’s iconic video for ‘Meri Chunar Udd Udd Jaye’. This enchanting song tells the story of a young girl confined in a strict household, secretly yearning for her ‘best friend.’ On revisiting the video years later, many viewers began to see hints of a same-sex love story emerging in its narrative, adding layers to its seemingly simple premise.

‘Aankhon Mein Tera Hi Chehra’
Shahid Kapoor’s classic music video remains a nostalgic favorite for many, especially now that he has become one of the leading stars in the film industry. When it first premiered, it captivated audiences with the story of a young boy fervently searching for the perfect gift for his crush. His infectious youthful exuberance and determination resonated deeply, leaving viewers swooning over the innocence of first love.

‘Sajan Mere Satrangiya’
Before rising to fame in the film industry, Priyanka Chopra appeared in a music video for Daler Mehndi. At just 17, after winning the Miss World pageant, she starred in Sajan Mere Satrangiya. In this video, Chopra portrays a Cinderella-like character yearning to attend a Daler Mehndi concert, and in a twist of fate, Mehndi himself comes to her rescue.

This charming portrayal showcases her early talent and charisma, which later blossomed into a successful acting career.
‘Kabhi Aana Tu Meri Gali’
Euphoria’s earlier music videos often revolved around themes of unrequited love and boys with a saviour complex. A memorable instance features Vidya Balan, who finds herself on the verge of an unwanted marriage. Just as things seem bleak due to a dowry demand, Palash Sen steps in to save her. This storyline brings a captivating mix of drama and nostalgia, making it a poignant watch that resonates with many.

‘Khoya Khoya Chand’
When we think about these music videos, it’s clear that many of us grew up with stories of forbidden love and the charming desi “prince.” One memorable video features Dia Mirza as a young woman who has to give up her love. This touching story really struck a chord with viewers and remains unforgettable.
‘Surma’
John Abraham hit the Hindi film scene with erotic thriller ‘Jism’ with Bipasha Basu. However, not many know that before that he made an appearance in Jazzy B’s catchy music video for ‘Surma’. Yes, you read that right! Apart from this, he also featured in music videos of Pankaj Udhas’ 1999 song ‘Chupke Chupke’ from the album ‘Mahek’.
As we reflect on the magic of 90s music videos, it’s clear that these visual treats were more than just catchy tunes—they were cultural phenomena that defined a generation.
As the industry evolves and music videos become more sophisticated, the charm of these early gems reminds us of a time when creativity reigned supreme. They laid the foundation for today’s visual storytelling, proving that the heart of music—whether in the 90s or now—remains the same: to connect, inspire, and entertain. So here’s to the trendsetting stars of the past, whose enchanting performances still light up our screens and hearts, and to the exciting possibilities that lie ahead in the world of music and visuals!
