Joe Dante’s 1984 classic film Gremlins is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary on June 8, 2024, and to mark the occasion, Max has released not only details for the second season of the animated series based on the film, but a new teaser trailer as well. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai debuted in 2023 exclusively on the streamer, serving as a prequel to Dante’s beloved movie. The series was the first new entry in the Gremlins franchise since the release of Gremlins 2: The New Batch in 1990, and there have been rumblings of a third film potentially happening.
As per Deadline, the second season of the Max animated series will be dubbed Gremlins: The Wild Batch. Returning characters include Sam (Izaac Wang), Ellie (Gabrielle Nevaeh Green), and, of course, Gizmo (A.J. LoCascio), in what promises to be a fun new addition to the franchise that takes viewers from Shanghai to San Francisco. Check out the official synopsis for Gremlins: The Wild Batch below.
“Season 2 follows Gizmo, Sam, and Elle as they travel from their home in Shanghai to San Francisco, bringing even more magic, mystery and Mogwai mayhem. Hot on the trail of a new brood of evil Mogwai, our heroes journey deep into the American West, coming up against new supernatural creatures and picking up a few mysterious characters along the way”
Gremlins: The Wild Batch is produced by Amblin Television, with Steven Spielberg serving as one of the executive producers, along with Tze Chun, who also acts as showrunner. Spielberg has had a hand in the Gremlins franchise since its inception through his company, Amblin Entertainment, with director Joe Dante often crediting him for the movies’ success. In an interview with Variety in 2022, Dante reiterated the fact that it was Spielberg’s idea to make everyone’s favorite Mogwai a main character.
“In the original script of Gremlins, the Gizmo character turned into a bad Gremlin after about half an hour. We planned to make the movie a little bit darker. But Steven Spielberg decided in his wisdom that Gizmo should stick around and be the hero’s pal. If we had made the movie the other way, nobody would remember it.”
“The addition of Gizmo made the difference. In his own way, he’s the star of the movie.”
Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai Was a Huge Success For Max
Debuting on May 23, 2023, with a two-episode premiere to coincide with the launch of the newly revamped streaming platform, Max (formerly HBO Max), Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai featured 10 episodes in total that were released in batches of two each week until its conclusion on June 22. The animated series quickly garnered high praise from critics and fans, who said it recaptured the magic of the original film, while at the same time providing enough fresh adventures to hold the attention of modern audiences.
