Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Acolyte episode 1.
Star Wars has just premiered its newest TV show, The Acolyte, and thus Carrie-Anne Moss has made her galactic debut – but not for very long. Moss portrays the Jedi Master Indara, who is a member of the Jedi Order during the High Republic era. Taking place 100 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Indara lives during a time of relative peace in the Galactic Republic’s golden age, but the episode quickly proves that all is not as it seems for the Jedi and their galaxy.

The Acolyte premiere unleashes a Sith assassin at the end of the High Republic Era – but why is Mae killing the Jedi, and who is her Master?
The opening scene of The Acolyte introduces audiences to Master Indara, who engages in a thrilling fight against Amandla Stenberg’s Mae. This assassin, however, manages to get the upper hand on the Jedi Master and accomplishes her dark goal: killing Indara. It is nothing short of an utter shock to watch as Master Indara is cut down before the opening title sequence can even play, and it’s hard to believe Star Wars has really done something so bold with a name as big as Moss’.
Now that Star Wars has proven it’s willing to kill one of its biggest names in the first few minutes of The Acolyte, the stakes have been risen massively for every single character. Moss’ involvement in The Acolyte has long since been highlighted, as Moss herself has been a big part of the promotion for the series. The fact her character is killed off so quickly, then, proves that Star Wars isn’t afraid to do the same to any other character in this ensemble.
This is a shocking yet extremely smart move for The Acolyte. With a series so deeply rooted in mystery, the story will rely on its shocking twists, and Master Indara’s death has just become the first of many that puts every single character at risk. The other factor working on The Acolyte‘s side is the fact that its core characters are never seen in The Phantom Menace, which means none of them have plot armor – and thus could suffer the same fate as Indara.
The death of Moss’ character is truly a shock, though it does not mark the end of her appearances in The Acolyte. Based on footage released in various promos and trailers, there will be flashbacks of Indara with Master Sol and more depicting the tragic events of Osha and Mae’s childhood, which will place Moss back in her role as Indara. Unfortunately, however, Moss’ Star Wars future has been set, as The Acolyte has proven its boldness by placing her character’s murder at the heart of its story.
