The upcoming MCU outing Avengers 5 (formerly Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) could prove to be the most epic offering in the franchise so far, with a new report claiming that “more than 60 MCU characters could reprise their roles” in the movie. Alongside news that Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is the top choice to helm the project, a report by Deadline has revealed that “sources” have informed them of the huge ensemble cast that will be brought together to fight for the multiverse in “one of Marvel’s largest productions to date.”
“Sources close to both the project say more than 60 MCU characters could reprise their roles, including everyone from Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch to Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu and Karen Gillian.”
As revealed in the report, the likes of Doctor Strange, Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Thor, Loki, and more are just some of the heroes expected to return and team up in Avengers 5. And, according to these same sources, Avengers 5 would feature all these characters as “an ensemble” rather than as a core group as seen in the first two Avengers movies.
“Unlike the first four films in which there was a core group that consisted of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Hemsworth and Ruffalo, many of the characters in this film would have equal footing, making it more of an ensemble feature instead of a handful of characters leading the team.”
The likes of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, of course, also featured a large cast of characters, bringing together the core group alongside the likes of the Guardians of the Galaxy. But, while the final epic battle in Endgame included around 40 characters, Avengers 5 is now looking to top this. How exactly all these characters will play into the movie remains to be seen, but such a balancing act will be no easy feat. But surely such a large number is confirmation that Avengers 5 will finally bring The Fantastic Four and The X-Men into the MCU fray?
Avengers 5, which is currently due to be released on May 1, 2026, will bring the ‘Multiverse Saga’ to an end, with the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, set to conclude Phase Six of the MCU in 2027. Initially, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton was on board to helm but, after walking away from the project in November, the studio has been in search of a new filmmaker capable of crafting another Avengers epic.

Kang was rumored to have been dropped from Avengers 5 following the legal woes and dismissal of actor Jonathan Majors.
And they think they’ve found him in Shawn Levy. Known for Night at the Museum, Real Steel, Free Guy, and The Adam Project, Levy is now reportedly the “top choice” for director and “is having early conversations” with Marvel.
Before potentially directing The Avengers in their latest adventure, Shawn Levy will first helm Deadpool & Wolverine. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, the rest of the cast includes Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen.
Deadpool & Wolverine should suitably demonstrate Levy’s skills at balancing a whole host of characters alongside some multiversal madness, as the sequel finds the titular pair sent on a mission which will change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
