Instagram was throwing up errors for some users earlier in the day, according to outage tracking website Downdetector. The situation peaked at around 4:10 AM EST in the US with over 180 complaints registered on Downdetector. The most common issues reported by users included problems with accessing the Instagram app, login-related issues, and an inability to access the feed on the platform.
Since then, however, the spike seems to have fallen down sharply on Downdetector, and users also reported on the platform that they were now able to access Instagram and that the login issue seems to have been fixed.
As for users in India, Downdetector never showed a prominent spike, and we were able to access Instagram throughout the outage.
If you are still facing problems using Instagram, it may be a good idea to close the app and relaunch it on your phone, or better yet, try clearing the cache of the app to get rid of any local issues. If you are browsing Instagram on your browser, it would be a prudent idea to try clearing the cookies and retry loading the page. You can also try updating the Instagram app to fix any ongoing issue with the app.
While there is no official word from Instagram or Meta on the outage, since a login issue was raised by users on Downdetector, certain users may need to re-login to the app in order to use the service.
Recent outages this year:
This year has been marred by several big and small outages, with the highlight being the Amazon Web Services outage that occurred in mid-October. The outage lasted over 15 hours and affected a lot of major services at the time, including Snapchat, Reddit, Slack, Instagram, WhatsApp, Signal, Discord, YouTube, Netflix, and Zoom.
Later that month, another outage struck Microsoft Azure, affecting many popular services like Microsoft 365, Teams, and Outlook. Another major outage occurred in November and December, which affected Cloudflare and once again led to a section of the internet going down. Platforms impacted included X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, Discord, WhatsApp, Zoom, OpenAI (ChatGPT), Claude, Perplexity, Zerodha, and Upstox.
Meanwhile, an outage affecting Google and YouTube users occurred earlier this month, impacting thousands of users across India, the UK, and Canada.
Music streaming giant Spotify also suffered an outage earlier this month, but the disruption was resolved by the Swedish tech giant in under three hours.
