Trump’s physician, Dr. Sean Barbabella, said the president is in “excellent health” and that the MRI was given “because men in his age group benefit from a thorough evaluation of cardiovascular and abdominal health.”
“OK, fair enough,” Colbert said in response.
But then he went a little further and offered a medical opinion of his own for the president.
“Men in his age group also benefit from retiring,” he pointed out. “So, can we write that prescription next?”
Trump, 79, has faced growing concerns over his health, and the MRI was part of a hastily announced visit to Walter Reed Medical Center last month for a “routine yearly checkup,” which took place just six months after his previous annual physical.
He’s also been seen apparently struggling to stay focused at White House events, including one last month, when he spent some 20 minutes battling to keep his eyes open, according to a Washington Post analysis of the video.
Last month, the New York Times reported that Trump is holding fewer events, traveling less, and working shorter days as a concession to his age.
