We’re used to seeing celebrities on the red carpet, but on Tuesday David and Victoria Beckham were on just about the reddest carpet out there — at Windsor Castle as the ex-footballer and superstar received his knighthood.
Coming on the same day that Hugo Boss delivered its results and hailed the impact that Beckham — sorry, Sir David — has had, the knighthood underlines the way publicity and the Beckhams go hand in hand. After all, not all knighthoods get such global attention as this one.
Sir David is a key ambassador for the company’s Boss line (along with Adidas, Tudor, how own label and more) although reports said the bespoke formal three-piece suit he wore was “designed by” his wife, which would mark her menswear debut.
The footballer said the King “was quite impressed with my suit. He’s kind of the most elegantly dressed man that I know, so he inspired quite a few of my looks over the years and he definitely inspired this look”.
He added that “I looked at old pictures of him when he was quite young in morning suits and I was like, OK, that’s what I want to wear, so I gave it to my wife and she did it.”
Lady Victoria (as she’ll now be known) wore a navy blue not-quite-maxi dress from her own label. Featuring split sleeves and ruching at the waist, she teamed it with a veiled fascinator.
The knighthood is for services to sport and charity and Sir David said he’d use it “for the good of the UK”. He was previously awarded an OBE in 2003.
